I'm having cloudy water problem with my 1 ft shrimp tank for several weeks now. Have been keeping this tank for a year. Have tried changing 10% water everyday and doesn't help. I've put an additional filter for over a week now and it still doesn't resolved the problem. What's other ways can I do to clear the water without harming my shrimps and plants. Other than the cloudy water, the shrimps looks fine.

    Re: Cloudy Water

EDIT: I didn't see it was a 1 year tank.

That only happens to my tanks which are left outside.
I use that badun thing from LFS then do water change. it seems to bind them to a some fluffy lot (the green water) then i get rid of them during the water change.

It could be due to your light period? i leave the others who have more experience with that to advise.

So this is 1 year old tank but suddenly become cloudy? Anything you do before it become cloudy? My guess would be initial stage of green water.

    Re: Cloudy Water

Did not do anything different to cause the cloudy water. btw its white cloudy water. I notice the water turning slightly cloudy before CNY and started to do more regular change. i then went away for my hols and the water turn real cloudy when I came back. That's when I started to do daily water change. I suspect its either a bacteria bloom or the water is too hard. what will be a good way to clear this problem once and for all?

    1. Post a picture of your tank.
    2. How about highlighting your filter. Aids in troubleshooting the cause.
    3. Highlight the food that you are feeding currently.

Do you have any strong air pump? Because I also have a cloudy problems
but it is because of micro bubbles from the air pump. I I offthr pump, the water is clear.

    Re: Cloudy Water

When the tank was cloudy, which filter did you touched, can recall?
    Any replanting?
Any change of brand for your algae tablet recently?

    Re: Cloudy Water

no replanting, no change in algae tablet. This thing has been a bit of a mystery so far. I've resorted to chemicals and added some water purification solutions. seemed to be showing some improvement in water quality but 1 of my CRS just died...sad

    Re: Cloudy Water

    Interesting topic.

Over changing the water might be a possibility?

Oddly enough, excessive water changes can also cause cloudiness, as removing too much water from the tank will disturb the bacteria bed that is providing your biological filtration, and your tank may become cloudy for a few days as the biological filter reestablishes itself. Regular, frequent, small water changes will help to keep your aquarium clean, clean, and healthy.

    Re: Cloudy Water

    Chek,

If you are using a bucket or mug to pour water into the tank, could you also use a saucer plate (Small plate that you put sauce like dark soy sauce) on the other hand, and pour the water onto the saucer plate to reduce disturbance. If you do this, would there still be cloudy water?

The small saucer plate would act like buffer like what ADA documentation has recommend but they are using the other hand to buffer the force of introducing the water.

    Hi there,

sorry to hear of the loss.
Maybe can you do a $1 experiment to see if its algae water?
Shrimps have low immunity so its not really advisable to resort to chemical-warefare.

Buy a packet of badun from any LFS.
Take a container and fill it up with some of your tank water.
    Dump in the badun.
    Observe if something clumps together.

    If yes, its algae water.

    Re: Cloudy Water

thks all. I've done a number of experiment and decided to move my shrimps to the bigger tank and change the water entirely (about 90%) cos I did not want to disturb the ADA. The water is still a little cloudy and I've added mollies (heard they are good in eating floating bacteria and will observe for a couple of weeks.

    Re: Cloudy Water

hmm... Try putting crystal Clear in it? just buy a bottle from your LFS. For bigger tanks you can put Bio chem zorb in it. It's a filter medium that makes the water crystal clear and balances PH. removes unwanted chemicals and stuff. Keeps the odor down. But the thing i got it most for was for crystal clear water. my 4ft had yellowish water and when i put the biochemzorb in it went crystal clear within a week.

    Re: Cloudy Water

Hi finally found the problem, which is the substrate. Have changed the ADA soil with sand and the water is clear now. Suspect the ADA is fake cos it's less than 1 yr old.
