it depends on the origin of the fish (Peru/Brazil.. or other parts of south amercian or bred else where)

but there are a few species of oto available.. (Zebra, spotted & etc)

    doesn't really matter
they all do much the same job
when you go to any lfs and ask them for "xiao jing ling", those will do the job just fine

    don't worry with IDing them
no need to be so hardcore

From what I understand the smaller oto comes from Columbia region while the bigger Oto comes from Brazil region. Both does the job of eating algae. But from my experience, the Columbian Oto seems more hardier. Anyone can confirm.
    Cheers!!

I can't cofirm the hard working bit, but can testify that the Columbian ones die as easily a the Brazil and Peru ones.

In general, some species are more opportunistic and like fish food. I suspect these could be farm bred otocinclus. The wild caught ones (e.g. Gan's) are not so conditioned to eat on demand and will therefore graze on algae pretty often. As for effectiveness, a small pleco or whip tail catfish is definitely more effective, but they grow but and start to disturb the plants. What a shame.

    Cheers,
I have dwarf cichlids in my tanks! Do you?

Yo David, Gan just came in a tankful of Zebra Ottos, you might want to check it out.

As for the different kind of ottos.... I still prefer the samller size one. Dono just my personal feeling that they are more hard working then the bigger size one.[]
