Hi, just bought a breeder box for my guppies as previously my guppies had fries but were eaten up by other fishes in the tank due to my non-preparedness.

Hence, I have recently acquired a breeder box.

Now question is, how do I know when to put the pregnant mother into the box? I know roughly gestation takes estimated abt 3 weeks. Are there any tell-tale signs I should look out for when I should put the mama into the box?

Appreciate any replies from more experienced guppy breeders.

    Thanks!

    Re: Guppy Breeding

Hi, i started guppy breeding past few months and one of my female gave birth to 4 batch of frys. actually you do not need any breeder box. To know when the guppy is pregnant look out for the black spot near the stomach and also take note for the growing stomach. Once you see that you can take the female out and put them in a small plastic tank. try putting some plants or stones in it if you are not using a breeder box.

one sign is when she is staying near the water surface not swimming very actively, she is about to breed, then you can put it in breeder box.

    Re: Guppy Breeding

A guppy female can store sperm from a single mating for successive batches of fry. Hence you will not be able to know with 100% certainty when she will produce the next batch. If a breeding trap is difficult to handle, and you do not wish to injure the female, or cause her to abort her fry, then you must make sure the tank is furnished with hideouts for the fry to escape predation.

Perhaps it is easier to isolate the female in a separate tank with some driftwood/leaves/moss etc. when the gravid spot is evident. Do not move the female when she is heavily pregnant or there is a high chance she will abort the fry.
