i have no idea, but if you get hairgrass from TEO, he told me "plant on any side" will do .. because he said something like the top will eventually "wither", and the bottom will eventually have roots
I was at this LFS in Jurong East yesterday (somewhere near the hawker center near Telecom, where there are all the low-rise buildings and shops, near Jurong Town Council).
I saw the owner plant ALL the hairgrass in the inverted manner, that is, with the leaves fully stucked in the substrate and the roots fully exposed. This is consistently done for the whole front portion of the display planted tank.
I find this very amazing.
What do you think the owner is trying to achieve?

Very interesting information can we verify this?
It will keep all the rooting part inside, keep the grass down and grow clean blades on the top
I think its defnitely possible. HG grows by runner which put out at the root. When new leaves grow, it will grow towards light source.
Just wondering if this method gives better result?

From what i know, TEO's supply of hairgrass are actually cultivated/grown on soil, so they are not submerged in water. Thus the top of these hairgrass has some sort of a "bud" on them.
They will "wear off" after around 3-4days after i have planted them into my tank. It depends on the tank conditions.

did you ask the owner?
it seems counter intutive, perhaps check back in 2 weeks and see what he grew
er refering to me? yes they are just like normal hairgrass now.

I have a sneaky feeling that the hairgrass species mentioned is Eleocharis vivipara.
Description:Hair-fine grasslike leaves which produce adventitious plants at their tips.
BC
BC I agree, can find a lot of this in Thompson Road lokang, but not suitable for tank as it is too tall and keep producing plantlets from the tip.
why I don't do garden hybrids and aquarium strains: natural species is a history of Nature, while hybrids are just the whims of Man.
