    finally did it. replaced the ageing, anaerobic Lonestar in my 3 ft with Aquasoil Africana/PowerSand, and ditched the stem plants (bar Potamogeton gayi and Najas indica). And reduced lighting from the previous 144W to 72W. Other plants now: Crypts (wendtii, balansae, cordata, griffithi, willisi, tonkinensis), ferns (Marsilea, java, Bolbitis), moss, Anubias nana and Barclaya longifolia. Once stabilised, plan to add in school of chocolate and liquorice gouramis, plus rasboras/boraras.

    perhaps styrofoam. cork bark or a moss wall?

    no lah... i am waiting for the balansae and barclaya to develop, and the ferns on the right side are good enough a backing.
