I am skeptical about this product. It consumes N from the water.

"Algone eliminates excessive nutrients from the water leaving existing algae spores with nothing to feed on."
If that is the case, plants would have suffer. Algae needs less nutrients than plants.

    It is not a fool-proof.
"Algone is not a quick fix for the problems that may be apparent in the tank. These problems took a while to develop and get your attention. Nor is it a solution for everything like a silent bullet... "

I think it is better to learn the basics of the planted tank.

It is possible for an algae-free tank without these products.

All algicides fail for one reason. They don't grow plants.

Algae is not the real problem.
    Poor plant growth is.

Algae doesn't grow well in thriving planted tanks. This is a universal observation.

When the plants are not growing, they simply become a substrate and source of nutrients for algae.

Therefore grow the plants well and you don't have algae.

New folks are often tempted to use an algicide, but I'll tell you that any nice planted tank owner worth their salt would never use an algicide nor recommend one.

A new algicide come down the line every few years. Ignore them. It's a waste of your time and money.

Just do the basic work to keep the tank in good shape through pruning, water changes and dosing 2-3x a week.

If you keep up on this, you should have a bubbly tank full of plants and no algae.

If I come off harsh on snake oils/algicides and the like it's because they prey on a few types of people, those that just started out and are ill advised, those who are stubborn, those who go "Well maybe it works, it's only 10$ a bottle" and those who fell like "Well maybe we should look into it to see if there's any merit to the claims etc"

But it still is an issue of why there's algae in the first place. Poor plant growth.

That cuts all that other arguement/discussion right out and gets to "the meat on the bone" of the issue.

    Hi hi... new member here

Have a suggestion in addition to what is already adviced by all the pros here. Which type of algae is bugging you? My tank was plagued with brush (or izzit bush?) algae once, tried so-called algaecide too but didn't work at all... had to manually use my hands but it always grew back on the sand. Then i heard about and bought Siamese Algae Eaters (SAE) which ate everything up in 4 days flat... clean as a whistle from then on []
