downlights are pl lights, the heat generated will be much lesser than incandescent. pl lights are good as they are more compact and able to get a high Wattage with a smaller space.
Yo, was wondering about using lights (the bulbs I mean) for downlights. I supposed its of lesser space. Eats up less energy but churns out more light. Anyone tried this before? What kind of lights are these? PL or incandescent? What about the heat? Thanks
Iskandar

do you mean floodlights instead of drownlights? are those downlights referring to halogen? if so, only good for small tanks plus the down side of using them is the colour temperature, which is too yellow
I think I am referring to the pl ones, not halogen. They look real small, but supposed to be bright. Saw those at NA. Longer than those used as down lights. Does the brightness matter or the watts? I get a bit confused about all this ... sorrylah, newcomer mah[]

LOL... if you had said the ones you saw at NA, we would have given you a defnite answer sooner. Yes, those are PLs. PLs are very commonly used for planted tanks.
Vincent - AQ is for everyone, but not for 'u' and 'mi'.
Why use punctuation? See what a difference it makes:A woman, without her man, is nothing.
A woman: without her, man is nothing.
Vinz ... paisehlah. Thanks for d note tho. Can see you are "belly red" But those used at home don't need a ballast, do they?
Iskandar
Ballast? Yes, they all do, but some PLs come with built-in ballast. For those, the plastic part is usually larger. The screw in ones have built-in ballasts. I think it depends on many pins there are too, but I'm not sure about that. My downlights uses ballasts.
P.s. it's not "belly red", it's "fire-belly".

Just a bit on PL lights...
The type of lamp we normally used for downlights are the 2-pin type with 2 U-shape tubes.
This type has incorporated the starter in the lamp and is normally used with a copper core ballast.
Wattage available: 10W, 13W, 18W & 26W
Another type similar to the above is the 2-pin with 1 U-shape tube.
This type also has incorporated the starter in the lamp and is normally used with a copper core ballast. We normally see this used in our table lamps.
Wattage available: 7W, 9W & 11W
This is a 4-pin with 1 U-shape tube.
It does not have a starter. We normally use it with an electronic ballast or control gear.
Wattage available: 18W, 24W, 36W, 40W & 55W
This is the type we use in our aquarium lighting because of the availability of higher wattage tubes.
The type mentioned with intergrated ballast are the ones we called energy-saving bulbs. We use it in place of incadenscent bulbs.
No need for ballast or starter, all built-in.
Wattage available: 11W, 15W, 20W & 23W

E-ballast do not need starter.

Wah, so detailed. Thanks for sharing the knowledge, BCLee. I currently have 2x30w for my planted tank (4 feet). I'm very sure not enough. Can we actually change the fl lights to pl? Will it be expensive or can we just DIY?
Thanks[]
