These valves are used to control the flow rate of the filter too.

Sherwin, I am using the 2222. The manual is not very clear but seems the output valve can be used to control the flowrate. I tried and it does work. However, do you know if this is the intended use and it will not damage the filter?

I have emailed Eheim tech support some time back and they claim it is not recommended , as performance will be decreased ( in the sense of flow rate thru the canister obviously ) but more importantly , the lifespan of the rotor motor might be sacrificed and lessened.

In the email , this is especially so for the filter models in which the inlet tubing is larger than the outlet tubing.

    So just do take note

I am using the 2222 also. I adjust both the input and output valves to get the flow rate I want. Otherwise, there seem to be some noise from the filter. This way, maybe will not damage the filter?

mmm... the manual says not to shut-off the in-valve to stop the flow, not sure if it is recommended to adjust the in-valve for lower flow-rate. Have you use this method for some time?

Also when I shake the filter, ie tilt it side-to-side maybe about 5-10 deg from vertical, I can hear air being sloshed around inside and then blown out through the spray-bar. Is this normal?

Koah Fong, thanx for the info. Anyway notice my glosso (just planted yesterday) already bubbling so I may not need to turn down the flowrate after all.
