hi! how are these fishes doing? Still early days to say if they will thrive. Some people really do well in discus and planted tank combination.

Re: Discus with planted tank to share

    hi there!
thanks for asking, for now the discus are doing fine except for a minor outbreak of ICH which i am treating with seachem paraguard religiously.

Out of the 8 discus, some are really bold and active eaters, but some just choose to hide behind the plants and rarely eats.

Wonder what I should do with those! perhaps more time is needed for them to acclimatize.. thoughts?

My thoughts is .. they hide less if you provide more place for them to take cover. feed them in small amount but frequent.

Some of my discus also hid amongst the plants while some fed well in the first 2 weeks.

After I got an auto feeder, all the discus stabilized and none of them hide.

In fact, they can tell the time.

They start to gather near the area where the food will drop from the feeder 10 minutes before the food is dispensed.

Re: Discus with planted tank to share

    wow!
things are getting better now for them now after i got a few more pcs of discus. Those that were hiding were less shy and started coming out to feed!
i was toying with the idea of auto feeder + timer for canister filter so that i can turn off filter for 5 min when its feeding. Do you know if that will shorten the lifespan of the eheim canister?

There is no known case regarding turn off filter thereby spoiling it in the long run. But I will not do that. Filters are meant to run

I would have grown the tank first before adding the discus! They are messy eaters and keep some cherry shrimp. They'll tolerate the warmer water and eat leftovers in the filter! [seriously]

    Yup!

The new discus force the older discus to come out from hiding to establish the new pecking order.
An auto feeder gives you convenience.
It also ensure that you can feed several times a day at set timings.
For planted tank, Moderate the feeding amount so that the discus finish the pellet food fast.
Add some cherry shrimps or SAE or octos to clear the scraps.

For bloodworms or beefheart, use small amounts and hand feed if possible. Discus will learn to eat out of your hands literally.
Keep the filter on. Start stop generates fine dirt particles.
I feed bloodworms as Evening treats.

Add some fast growing plants in the background to absorb more nitrates!

Re: Discus with planted tank to share

    Wow! great advice bros/sis!

Everyone's eating now, except the once in a while jitterish behaviour caused by 1 of the discus, making everyone dash around aimlessly. i.e when i turn on the lights in the morning or drop food into the water.

Feeding hikari bloodworms and brineshrimps, sometimes mixed with NLS pellets that my red melon love

I have corys and Ottos clearing the mess, contemplating on shrimps though. Wouldn't they breed really fast and swarm the whole tank, eggs stuck somewhere?

Plants i have quite a few low plants to hold the ada soil together, and lots of NANA and java ferns to absorb the nitrates! working really well.

    I have some new questions

    1) sometimes they hurt themselves whilst hitting the wood or rocks while dashing. I assume the minor surface dmg will heal over time? Also, the dashing behaviour should lessen as they get more and more familiar with the environment?

    2) i have them on 7 days seachem paraguard treatment so far for Ich. So far so good, it was introduced by the Ottos i got earlier from an undisclosed LFS. Should i continue treatment for another 14 days to ensure all ich parasites are gone?

    3) is a UV sterilizer useful? Honestly i have seen mixed comments on various website. Would like to hear your views.

    3) I am using eheim pro 2/2026. It has the built in flowrate adjust feature that i am using during every feeding time. I dont think that should shorten the lifespan of the filter though unless any of you have bad experiences.

I will post photos again tonight! Thank you all for your advices!

Perhaps there is still room to improve on both the plants and discus. Noticed there're ammonia and PH alerts stick on the tank glass, need to peel off the centre piece for them to sense correctly.

Anyway planted tank looks better than bare tank but less convenient to maintain.

Re: Discus with planted tank to share

It is great to know that the discus have settled down and are feeding well.

For smaller size discus, it is good to feed several small portions a day.

I read that the size of a discus stomach is just slightly bigger than its eye.
So more frequent small feedings is better than 2-3 bigger feedings.

For a more uniformed look, you can place a bigger piece of Driftwood with java fern in the centre.

The overall look would be more uniform so that the eye sees a continuous hedge from the left to the centre, with an activity area for the discus on the right for feeding and observation.

The centre DW should be placed slighty forward so that it creates a "hiding" area at the back of the tank so that the discus can withdraw there if they are "spooked" or if they just need some privacy for "fishy" business" (hehe).

There's one plastic clear sticker in the center, you got to remove it so that it can make measurement. It can last 3~4 months or more. I don't use this type any more.

Some fishes may still need more attention like more feeding and care. I don't keep planted tank so I am not sure how frequent you do water change. Perhaps I guess small % water change for planted tank, and feed only tetrabits and/or Frozen blood worm is alright. Some may look stunt but I think you can feed them more. I guess when you bought them they already stunt.
