Should be the driftwood.
Unless you added peat.

Those are organic acids that come from driftwood or peat or things like dried ketapang leaves.

During initial setting up of my tank, quite abit of plants melted and some died. Having no chance to do water change or removal of the dead matters, the water quickly turned yellow and then brown. No driftwood was in my tank. Thus, it's high chance that the dead plants or leaves caused the water to become humic. Small ammounts of dead leaves may not be so, but with the amount of dead plants I had, you'll be surprise how "brown" the water can get.
yah...was suspecting abt the dead leaves and such....hmmm.....cos they lost their green colour and turns yellowish...so the colour go where?water lor.[:]
bluezing,
It depends how much dead leaves. If a few, it won't be so significant.
but wat do u all do with the dead plants? is it better to leave them in there to decompose or remove it?
i normally just take out those that float on top and leave the rest on the bottom. wat about dead fishes? I was thinking its better to leave them to decompose as fertilizer for plants.
yellow water usually comes from the tannins leached from driftwood.
peat and other brackish water will also be the cause.
no experience from dead leaves. and btw, its not ideal to leave dead fishes in the tank.
keep lots of shrimps in your tank... they will clear up all the dad fishes for you.. not even the bone is left
