Now I am setting up a new tank as I have to shift my cubicle from one location to another location. Previously the place where I sat, it was not that cold. Temperature about 26 degrees but now unfortunately the air con is able to blow directly at me and this new fish tank. Temperature is now 23 degrees and I not sure what the temperature will be over the weekend.

This fish tank is from one of you brothers (it is passed down from hand to hand) dimension is 2ft by 6 inch and height 1ft. I intend to just keep it very simple as over the December periods, normally not available to maintain and monitor this fish tank.

It will be a terrarium, with a small area where I will do some moss, red fittonia or golden nana on the land area, then in the water, some mosses and just shrimps (cherry and sakura). I intend to breed them. The “land” area is more for fun and to see if can find some “small” plants to put there.

I intend to put about 50 shrimps inside with a Hang-On Filter with surface skimmer.

Question I have is what other fishes I can put inside that can stand this low temperature (very cold) even for me.

I have two 2ft desk type light lighting up the place. Will put some GEX soil at the bottom. The clay cat is for decoration. May put a “sunken ship” as well – as per request by my youngest son.

Finally got the new tank set up. I like the sound of water dripping from the small powerhead. On the right side is the GEX soil and on the left is some gravel left over from my students' previous tank. There is a very small snail in there now with a frogbit and some Golden Nana and a small moss ball. The water is from the cool water cooler. On the two foam platform I will put some Singapore moss - taken from outside in the field. I will intend to put Cherry and Sakura shrimps inside and as well as some neon tetras. The centre part is kind of dim but I guess that it will be enough as I only intend to have mosses on the GEX area (right side). I am now trying to get some of the water to run down the driftwood branches so that the whole branch will be wet so that I can put mosses there as well.

    Good start there!

Maybe can add more moss to cover the tubes, moss also gives the whole tank a very natural feel

As for the kitty, I thought it might look more interesting if the kitty's eye is slightly above the water level, kinda play into cat's inquisitive nature.

Do avoid having too many fishes as the little volume of water may foul easily and fishes makes your kitty go crazy!

^_^ Cat should face SouthEast direction, 7th month not over, don't attract the wrong stuffs.

Due to earth's rotation, direction will keep changing, hence better for you to either keep a compass or know the direction of the sun, align a + which your angle must be correct to where southeast is.3

If you interested to get Fengshui book then perhaps start with Li3 Ju1 Ming2 (1st Book on Fengshui - in Chinese) No.31 Book. Available from Popular Bookstore. (HK$100 - Oops I torn off the price tag liao). Else, knowing SouthEast direction will suffice.

Ha Ha! This Feng shui thing is note serious. I just put that cat inside so that I can know how much the water has evaporated. If the ears of the cat is showing, then I must top up the water to just the ears. Ok, the cat is not facing the east. Don't know if that is good. Will adjust it to face south-east, which is facing the corner of the tank - the edge of my cubicle.

Don't worry that much about the 7th month, just joking. Hee...it be over next Tuesday anyway, when we welcome both Hari Raya and Chinese Lantern Festival.
But usually people who believe in fengshui would take advantage of SouthEast Direction.

Water level marker huh? What I used to do is to put dot at the corner of the fish tank (ex-3ft), not quite visible; using permanent marker. But since your background already have markings, just find one exisitng line there and take it as a marker, I would like to think that would be more constructive, then place your cat out of the tank to the opposing wall facing the tank, and if you have say a CD rack tower, you could just do that nicely without upsetting too much of your furnitures. Use blu-tag at the bottom of course, you wouldn't want the cat to bungee off. *smile*

I thought it will be more a conversation piece rather than putting it else in my office cubicle, already so small. Just introduced 10 neon tetra inside. Hoping that they will "brighten" up the tank. They are rather immobile at the moment. Is the temperature a factor for them? the water should be a cool 23 degrees.

    Jack,
I like your creation the background look so original, there are room to improve to make the background look more natural is to add mixture epoxy resin/sand or either mixture cement/sand coating sure giving a "natural stone" look to the realization. Just ask me I'll go down to your house to remove the background and demonstrate how to use the mixture cement /sand coating.

Anyway keep it up, I'll be there for you!
    cheers
