Small fish,
DC fans are much less noisier than AC fans. If it the noise you're concerned abt then go for DC.

Peter: I agree with you. A ring into the telephone lines can make you jump up real high into the ceiling![] I had experience that too!

All: If AC-DC convertor is so troublesome, how about using those off the shelves DC adaptor?

I am using that to connect it to the 12vDC power supply salvage from a AT power supply.
I think that is the safest! The most is the adaptor that will burn off if anything is to happen.

FYI,
The shocks that you guys experienced from the tel is DC. DC is not really consider safe. The only reason why it is safer is that there in a transformer in the convertor and if there is any shock on the load side, it will be isolated by the tranformer. That's why it will not trip your home circuit breakers. Frankly speaking, in cases of faults, I would rather that the CB trips. At least I know that there is a fault. Any form of electricity is dangerous (even static electricity), the only way it is not dangerous is when you understand it well and treat it with respect.

I've been shocked by 12VDC b4. It's not only painful for 3 days but also there was a burnt mark for a month (not exagerating). My point is that DC is not actually safer than AC. However DC fan is better in terms of noise, weight and efficiency.
