Two months ago I bought a few from the LFS near the bird shops at Serangoon North Ave 1. $3 each. But yesterday I was there but only saw Neon Rainbows.

You may like to try Gan's. I saw he has a tank of assorted Rainbows. Not sure if the Bosemani is one of them. You can call up to ask.

I thought all Bosemanii are farm bred because they're not so difficult to breed, and PNG is rather tough for collection. Sometimes have to becareful when they tell you it is wild caught, unless you know the guy well.

FWIW, there was once an LFS claimed their cherry barbs are wild caught too! In fact cherry barbs are apparently almost extinct from the wild.

Another way to tell, empirically, wild fishes tend to have must stronger colours.

oh, if that is the case, it's good news. certainly don't want to pay premium for 'wild' species from a farm. if the species juggler got for 3 bucks are boesemanis, i think they are certainly a steal, most rainbowfishes i see on sale range from 3 to 5 dollars.

shouldn't the lower body show a red tinge instead of yellow ? or is it a change in body colouration for the fish according to its environment ?

yah that's the Boeseman's rainbowfish, probably some minor colour variations in individuals. Also their colouring is quite variable depending on mood. Also their dorsal edge from the forehead to the dorsal fin can turn a luminous yellow, probably sex display.

The Rainbow pics were taken a few weeks after buying. Not sure if this is the full colour yet. But in the shop they look more drab that I am not even sure they were Bosemani. I understand that the males are brighter coloured.

    Here's another one:

yah their colours are quite variable, and changes very fast too. try to get a pic when they flare their fins.

Just bought 2 rainbow fishes from Lor Halus, one red apple and one bosemani rainbow @ $3 each. The bosemani looks like the first pic, the one one that I saw in superstar Aquarium has got very strong colours.

what's a red apple? that's why I don't like going to those kind of LFS who label their fishes all kinds of fancy common names. although still better than C328 who put 10 kinds of fishes into one tank, no label, and only 3 prices!

see the one in the gallery... orangey instead of yellow, could be due to gene or water condition?
