I search the web for info for a couple of weeks and also thks to helpful advice from fellow members, I am very close to starting the process of breeding. I have contact with an australian enthusiast who have successfully bred for years. But I still lack of a few pointer which only fellow countrymen can help.

    1. May I know is tap water very soft?? <2DH? And what is the pH of tap water?

    2. How do i get healthy and safe live food for the spawning pair. I think of using tubefix but it is usually 'diseased' and smelly. Or can anyone teach me to keep them clean and alive? Blood worm don't stay alive long, or does anyone know how? Brined shrimp are salt water. Does anyone know of a dry type of food alternative that is as good as live ones?

    3. What is paramecium? Where can I get starter kit for microworm, vinegar eel to culture food for the fries. Or is there any dry food type?

Hope I can have some suggestions to help me. Thanks.

You can try frozen Daphnia. It is normal use for fries.

microworm n vinegar eel can ask from betta breeder.
If you've learnt, teach, if you have, give.
Don't walk behind me as I might not lead, don't walk in front of me as I might not follow. Walk beside me, as my friend.
Mohamad Rohaizal is my name. If it's too hard, use BFG. I don't mind.

Live daphnia is sometimes used by fish breeders to feed fries because they survive long enough to reproduce in the breeding tank and smaller fries can feed on these baby daphnia.

In comparison, frozen daphnia is seldom used because :

    1) Fries hunt for live food and frozen daphnia sinks to the bottom of the tank straight after you dump them into the tank.
    2) Since the frozen cube consists of mainly adult daphnia, smaller fries are often unable to eat them.
    3) Unconsumed frozen food fouls up water very fast.

If you are unable to find/keep a steady suppy of live daphnia, consider BBS, vinger eels or microworms for starter fry food.

Bloodworms and tubifex worms are usually introduced after a few weeks since they are too big for young fries to consume.

I have a pair of Hyphessobrycon copelandi, but the female still looks skinny.
Read these ppl breed tetras, would put the pair in a plastic container(w sponge filter), put lots of moss and place it at a dark place. Now still don't dare to take the risk to move the fish around.

You can start a microworm culture quite easily with oats and sugar mix. But you need to innoculate the mixture with a teaspoon of microworms. I used to know of a group of betta breeders under the name of BettaHan in Yahoo club. You can try posting in that forum to request for a culture. It should be given free.

As for life Daphnias, you can buy them from KS aquatics or GoNature.

For smaller frys (fries??), BBS and microworms are still the best food due to their smaller sizes. You can rinse the BBS with fresh water to get rid of the salt before feeding.

Daphnias are definitely meant for larger frys due to their much bigger sizes.

If you want to use tubifax or blood worms to condition your breeding pair, you can try rinsing the worms with a diluted mix of Listerine and water (1:4)and then with pure water before feeding. Alternative is to rinse with a diluted mix of myxazin (aqualife) which is recommended as a sterilizing agent for life food.

    Hope this helps...... good luck!!
