I am starting to dose K2SO4 for K and S (I read somewhere that S is also an essential nuitrient for plants)

Without having a K+ test kit, does anybody have experience on how to dose K2SO4? What will happen if I overdose?

I also read that 1 teaspoon of K2SO4 is about 6 g. Can I dose based on that to get 20ppm?

    Thank you.

There are a few links in this thread in the FAQ section.
    See http://www.aquaticquotient.com/phpbb...ic.php?t=12122

K+ test kits are out of reach for most of us. So dose sparingly on it or base on observation of nutrient deficiency symptoms.

Yes, S is one of the macronutrients in fact.

Let's see... I will roughly touch on the calculations.

    Atomic weight:
    K - 39
    S - 32
    O - 16

    Molar weight of K2SO4 = 39 x 2 + 32 + 16 x 4 = 174

    % of K in K2SO4 = (39x2)/174 x 100% = 44.8%

    Amt of K in 1 tsp(6g) of K2SO4 = 44.8% x 6g = 2.7g

If you dose 1 tsp of K2SO4 to your aquarium (say 100L)...

    2.7g / 100L = 0.027g/L = 27mg/L = 27ppm

    So 1 tsp of K2SO4 to 100L will give 27ppm of K.

If you also add KNO3, which has a fair amount of K, you only need to dose once a week, 1/4 teaspoon per 20-25 gallons or water.

LINE 1: If you dose 1 tsp of K2SO4 to your aquarium (say 100L)...
    LINE 2: 2.7g / 100L = 0.027g/L = 27mg/L = 27ppm
    LINE 3: So 1 tsp of K2SO4 to 100L will give 27ppm of K.

    Hi BC,

Need some clarifications, in line 2, why do you perform the division by 100L?? Is it because it is based on the assumption that the tank capacity is 100L? Does that mean if my tank is 300L (example only), I would have to divide by 300??

    Please Advise.

Don't stress... open eyes, read carefully instead. See the stuff I bolded in BC's calculations above? He is using 100L as the tank volume.
Vincent - AQ is for everyone, but not for 'u' and 'mi'.
Why use punctuation? See what a difference it makes:
A woman, without her man, is nothing.
A woman: without her, man is nothing.

    Hi,

Thanks, so that means whatever size I am considering I just divide by it. Any reason why is the calculation done this way?

    Thanks for all your postings.
I now dose a quarter teaspoon a week. Seems ok.
I used to see folded leaves sometimes now I don't see any. Maybe dosing K helps to balance the nuitrients.
