you should find out first why algae is growing till it becomes a problem to you. i don't need UV light to control them, so i don't know if it helps.

It great help for green water. It will also help to prevent algae by killing the spore that going pass through it. However, I doubt it will help killing algae that already grow in your tank.

    UV light can stop algae
This is a sweeping remark. Algae got many kind as we all know. Some can be undone by UV, some don't.

UV strong enough to kill algae (and bacteria) will probably blind you and the livestock in the tank.

There are devices called UV Filters or UV Sterilisers which you can attach in-line with your filtration system. These are OPAQUE, so that you will NOT be BLINDED by the the UV light. Sometimes recommended to deal with green water or bacteria bloom in tank water.

Any UV light weak enough to be safe to be mounted without shielding is probably NOT string enough to kill algae.

A woman: without her, man is nothing.

Try to reduce the number of hours the lights is turn on, and adjust the CO2 amount will reduce the algae.
