just sharing...i've been isolated them for 2-3 weeks. The female has laid egg once...but it looks like the male discus did not do his job properly ...

Is he a "male" or she? maybe that is the problem.

yes, i'll give them another chance. If still not working, i'll put them back in com. tank...let them choose their own mate.

I once had a lesbian pair, the male acts as a female during mating.

    Re: Discus - force pair

if it is not a proven male, sometimes it can be 2 females trying to spawn.
you must recognise which fish lays the eggs, if both then your puzzle is solved.

    Re: Discus - force pair

During the spawning stage, especially the egg-laying part, look for the ovipositor. The males should have a sharp tip, the females a blunt tip. That way you can see if you have a proper pair, or 2 of the same gender. Forcing them to spawn together may not work, if the male is not up to par, or just too young to successfully spawn. It is wiser to send them back to the community tank, and wait for a bonded pair to form.

    Re: Discus - force pair

Yes I had same, 2 females that would go through all the rituals together but of course they both spawned eggs and there was no fertilization so they just ate them always. I have moved them out of the tank now as there are eggs on cone, and added 3 other males to see if that entices any of them to go for it and fertilize the existing spawn of a stranger fish? LOL . Probably an exercise of futility, but will let y'all know if it is successful, they are certainly interested in the eggs, but time will tell, it's a fresh spawn only a couple of hours old now.

    Re: Discus - force pair

Well that was quick, the males decided that they were delicious lunch, so all are back in community tank again. I didn't harbour much hope in that male surrogacy and now I've tried that experiment just to see the reaction. Seems my discus just love the taste of fresh eggs! Oh well, maybe one day? Have had eggs spawned and fertilized by another pair previously, and a big show of care for 2 or 3 days until wigglers, then it's like a dinner bell is rung and they dine on them all!
