    Help guys!!
My guppies and yamatos are dying!! Alot of died already!!

    Tank - 4x1.5x1.5
    CO2 - 3bps
Fert - Base Fert ( Covered by gravel 2:1)
    Lights - 4 x 36 PL + 1 x 36 FL
    Temp 26-27
    Lights / CO2 on 12 hrs a day
    Only test done.. PH
PH level Colour - YELLOW!!! (ACID!!!)

Can anyone tell me what happened?

My Yamatos die, cardinals stopped swiming in schools, guppies drop to the base gasping for air..

For a start, it seems you are having a high CO2 concentration to cause the fish to gasp for air. Whats the kh? Try bubbling the air to relieve the fish for the moment.

Is 3bps high? I run on a solenoid, and was adviced to put it to 3bps by a pal..

Never use bubble rate as a judge for how much CO2 to inject. Bioload, plant load, diffusion method and plant uptake rate are factors that will affect how much CO2 you need to inject. Use pH/KH to determine the amount of CO2 in your tank...I guess you did not add any carbonate buffer into your tank did you? What's your KH? Possible cause of critter deaths might be directly caused by your CO2 injection(OD) or indirectly(large pH swing in short period of time...pH shock).

    Think you should

    1) stop all your CO2 injection.

    2) Remove the dead corpses and make a partial water change.

    3) Aerate your tank.

    4) Buy a KH test kit.

    5) Get the correct PH KH relationship.

    div,

From your thread in Arofanatics, it seems that your fishes only started suffering after you added new fishes and shrimps.

Assuming before that your fishes were fine before then, then CO2 might not be the problem. Looks more like an in-mature tank suffering from ammonia excess from the new bio-load.

When did the fish start showing the symptoms (which part of the day, during lights on, or during/near the end of lights off period)? Could be lack of O2, if your plants are not photosynthesising well yet.

How long were the original fishes there before the new residents were added? How long has the tank been up? How many fishes did you have/added before the deaths?

    Give us more info.

Thanks for helping vince. This tank has been up for close to 3 weeks now. My guppies were the 1st fishes in and they survived well, all 30 of them. My plants were fine and bubbling (riccia).. then i did a few things to change it..

    1st. i added 50 cardinals / 10 otos / 5 *ahem* flying foxes / 5 rummy noses / 10 yamatos / 1 mini puffer.

2nd.. i noticed that my canister filter was connected to my timer switch and realised that the canister goes off together with the lights and CO2, i undid that and let the filter run 24/7..

Tested my ph / kh.. not sure if i got this right, PH level is very low, bright yellow tests results.. KH i put in 2 drops and it turned yellow already so i assume its 2? (using sera kits)

What is the casue of my PH/ KH dropping so much? How can i remedy this? i added a small sachet of Coral chips this morning in a hope that it might bring it up for the time being till i find the root of the problem. Cos all my fishes are dying inside.. Anyway to remedy without adding chemicals? I prefer Au Naturale~~~

    Thanks again guys

The filter bacteria could have died during the timer-off period. Then it polluted the water subsequently when you turn it on.

A bit of coral chips can help bring up the kH. And the pH would be more neutral after this.

I think things should be better from now on. Build up the bioload slowly over days/weeks.

Looks like NH3 or NO2 poisoning to me. There has been an overload on the bio system.

First of all, switching off the filter cause nitrifying bacteria to die off in the filter. Lots of stuff starts rotting and a lots of bad stuff form in the filter.

Second, you tank is still very young, only 3 week old. Nitrifying bacteria has yet to established itself.

Third, sudden addition of too many fishes cause a sudden increase in urea/ammonia which your nitrifying bacteria could not handle.

    End results... DEAD FISHES.[]

pH/KH are not killing your fishes. Do not have to worry about that for the time being.

Hahahaha... that's a new one. You should post that to the Newbie Boo-Boos thread in Chit Chat.

As for the problem, I concur with BC.

Do a big water change. Add some salt (to prevent NO2 poisoning)... no more new fishes for the next few weeks.

If possible test for NO2. Wait till NO2 drop to zero.

Not suan... laugh at you only. No offence meant.

We do have thread called newbie boo-boos. I was meant for the "lao chiao" to post the boo-boos they made when they were newbies... in a way to remind us that we were "stupid newbies" too once upon a time. Just think your boo-boo can fight with some of the ones there, so asking you to post it there.

SO a massive water change will do? like 50%? Cos i just did 50%
