Just curious, how do ppl prune/trim moss, especially moss walls? Or do anybody maintain them at all? Which is better, Pulling out the fronds or giving the wall a "haircut"? Does anyone vacuum them? I know some ppl take moss tied driftwood, etc out and wash them under the tap, but moss walls do not offer that option.

    Vincent,

Never give haircuts to moss. Because if you do, tiny pieces of fronds that settle elsewhere in the tank will grow and you will find moss growing all over the shop.

I pull out the fronds selectively when the moss wall becomes too dense. But I have to admit this is easier said than done. Sometimes when I pull, a whole bunch becomes detached and a gap is left in the wall.

    Kwek Leong,

I was hoping you would reply. Thanks. Well that's what I tried after posting. Fortunately, I didn't leave any large gaps in the wall.

Hi Vinz, may I ask what is your water temperature? Me too is also thinking of reattempt growing moss.
I failed a couple of times growing moss in the past due mainly to the water temp. Temp was 30 in the past but is able to get 27 deg now with DIY fan.

    Will moss grow at 27deg?

    Thanks.

On average my tank is at about 27 to 28 celcius. Recently, 26.something not unusual for a rainy day. The moss was growing fine during the 27 to 28 celcius period. I tried something mentioned by forumers... put the moss in the path of a good current like the filter output. Showed better growth after that.

    One question :

Which is a faster growing moss?

    1) Christmas Moss
    2) Taiwan Moss
    3) Java Moss

Please pardon my ignorance. Is there anymore other mosses?

What petmart is selling is not the Christmas moss. It is most likely to be the Taiwan moss. By the way, growing moss emmerse is a very slow process, both timebomb and I have tried that before, infact the pot is hanging outside my house now. It is quite interesting, the Christmas moss seem to loss its shape when grown emmerse.

    java moss.

near my place I notice that there were mosses growing (emerse form) and dry... under a tree.. so brought it back to the office and let a freind of mine whose working in NUS lab to check wat kinda moss it was.. and to my surprise he said that is java moss.. and he said it can be submerged and will grow but it will take sum time for it to adapt to the new environment... . its been 2 weeks now after i took them from the place where i found them and tied them on my drift wood and now they have shown sign of growing... good eh.. free java moss...

Yup...It will grow well in 27 degree celsius. Well, if you want to get moss to grow well, dose more potassium into the tank, it seems to promote moss' growth in my case. Some shading helps too.

    tltan,

That is what Sam Pets' call "christmas moss". Due to the confusion caused, some ppl in AQ have christen it "erect moss".

    ----------------
And with good reason too What's growing on the driftwood is the Erect Moss and those in the background are the Christmas Moss.

On the contrary, $5 would be very cheap. It doesn't matter if $5 get you a few strands or a whole tub of it because if you can grow them, all you need is a little to start with.

I don't have any for sale but if I do, you can bet that I will sell for much more than $5.
