Was feeding my fishes this evening and noticed something unusual about my Bosemani Rainbow.

There is this red spot on its belly. The fish is still active and eating. I feed my fishes a combination of flake food and BW.

Is the red spot some kind of internal bacteria? Or could it be a bite from other fishes? I have 2 Bosemani ranibow, with 20 carinal tetra, 10 rummy red nose, 6 cories and 5 bumble bee goby in my 4ft planted tank.

I have been adding a tiny amount of salt during water change since day one.

if the fish is otherwise healthy and feeding, it's probably a wound or scrape. Some books recommend adding more salt than usual to help prevent infection. But I think if the fish continues to feed well, it should heal after a while.

Incidentally, I was reading in the most recent issue of FAMA: one writer observed that her little emperor tetras are able to render fatal bites on each other - she observed one male biting a chunk out of another fish, which quickly died.

So beware of these little fishes with teeth....
