Hi, I'm looking at geting some low requirment plants for my 4ft planted tank to fill up some shaded areas. I'm running a chiller at 26.5 degrees. I'm very attracted by the moss balls. But i understand they're actuall algae (Marimo Algae Balls). Do they spread to attached to other plants like other pest algae? Any other recommendations for plants with low light requirments? Appreciate some advise/ recommendations. Tks

Moss balls, in nature, come in 3 forms. One of them is what we see all the time in LFSs, which is the round ball form. Another, is the carpet form, which can be found on the shaded side of rocks. The last is the floating form composing of a few filaments which, when settled down, can also form a carpet. More info can be found here.

Re: Moss Balls and Low light plants

    ask me , i am a marimo !
    lol

marimo basically are algae and no difference from the float or settled down, we are round shape because we are formed by constant turbulence and wave action and form a round shape.
However the ones you buy from LFS do not belong to the natural habitat such as hokkaido,
It is done by humans to make us like a ball

Marimo like cool water and clean water. We are more green in cold water. we need to be squeeze as we are dirt magnet, toss us and spin us around otherwise our south pole wont get enough light

    Yawn

last thing we grown very very slow like less than 1 cm a year
we shrink in size if the condition is bad get burnt with direct sunlight

its weird to hear a marimo answering in a forum.. LOL

Btw, i really wonder how something that grow so slow can be sold in large quantity in LFS while decently priced. Marimo, maybe u can answer that too? any way to hasten the process of growing YOU?

    Yesi Yesi
I have been tested like a hamster with different stuff
my comrades also tio, we are kept in different air seal glass jar from ikea and we only speak to each other when we have weekly bath

We have been tested with clean water, cold water, no hot water
    tested with Co2
    tested with fertilizer
    tested with aqua salt
    tested with mitsubishi refridgerator
    tested with lava rock
    tested with distill water
tested with spinning like washing machine

The result is ... there no way to find out if we can be grow faster, because it takes years to measure the growth rate !
