Just saw my boss's Fujifilm S5000 and now I'm "gian" to upgrade my DC.

What I liked was that in addition to the full auto mode, it also has almost full manual (aperture, exposure and focus) mode. There are many other in-between modes and features, in addition to the "standard" features that come on comtemporary DCs. Priced at around S$600-700.

Quite a nice package for the amatuer photographer who ocassionally wants more control then a run-of-the-mill AF, but not interested in, nor able to afford a full-featured SLR (digital or otherwise).

I've been surfing some of the digital-camera/photography forums and reviews sites, but it's quite hard to spot other cameras in the same category (features/cost) from the many models available. Can the more experienced photographers list out a few similar models to look at? The basic criteria:
    - Manual mode available.
    - Good macro range.
    - Priced below $1K.

    Many thanks in advance.
Vincent - AQ is for everyone, but not for 'u' and 'mi'.
Why use punctuation? See what a difference it makes:
A woman, without her man, is nothing.
A woman: without her, man is nothing.

I think other things to add to your criteria:
    - SHUTTER LAG
    - support external flash/hot shoe
    - aperture priority
    - shutter priority
    - full manual focus
    - exposure conpensation
    - flash exposure conpensation
    - metering modes. (spot + evaluative or partial + evaluative)
    - storage media type (Compact flash is the most cost effective)
    - good focal length (24-200mm)
    - aperture size (how fast the lens is)
    - support ISO modes.
    - resale value.

I tried using your criteria, on dpreview and got the minolta D7
anyway, more knowledgable people can help

    * but if I weren't buy a DSLR, I might go for
    Minolta Dimage A1
    olympus C5060 Wide Zoom
but those are probably out of budget.

how about Minolta DiMAGE Z1 ? it looks REALLY neat.
    or canon A80.

anyway, I think you should check out shutter lag first and foremost.

    heh

Yeah, agree on the shutter lag and pretty much the rest of the features you mentioned.

if you're going to do fish photos, external flash is a must so make sure it has hot shoe. also most built-in macro is not good enough so you ought to be able to add filters.
why I don't do garden hybrids and aquarium strains: natural species is a history of Nature, while hybrids are just the whims of Man.
