i think hc needs cooler temperatures or it will melt
i suggest mosses. most will grow lushly, just slower, w/o chiller

Any kind of mosses? Other than mosses?
Japanese Hairglass / Glosso / Echinodorus tenellus

Chris, but gloss need more care than hc right?
Hmm, Glosso need sufficient light if not they will actually crawl upwards instead of crawling on the floorground...But i am not very sure if glosso need more care than hc...

my HC is growing at 30c water temp. It does require more care in ferts and CO2 requirement.
if i am not wrong, it should be harder than glosso.

What is your tank temp? I can grow hc at 28-29 without problem, co2 more important than temp. If you wamt less maintenance you can try hairgrass. Glosso grow very fast, so you will need to trim. HC is tricky during initial stage but ok once their root grow. Trimming hc is tricky because you might endup uprooting them.
You might want to try elatine triandra or utricularia graminifolia, don't need chiller.
i agree .. HC is tricky during initial stage when its rooting .. my snails and shrimps keep uprooting them and dig beneath them .. argh
Glosso need good lighting to crawl well. If adding co2 or cooler waters only aid the growth.
Ps. Try hc since February until now still slow. Glosso so much easier

Common Name: Dwarf Sagittaria. Proper Name: Sagittaria subulata you may want to consider that. but you need to trim the plant frequently to 'train' it to be a low lying plant

Hc needs more attention can care imho. Co2 / lightings / low temperature makes a difference in achieving nice carpet growth. If you want something that is non chiller i would suggest glosso or hairgrass. App is also a good choice though.
I'm trying out glosso n hc, initially light was low abt 1.8wpg but temp was good as I was using fan, 27-28, HC look frail and glosso growing upwards. When I upgraded to 3+wpg, the temp range from 29-30. Glosso immediately spread sideways but as for HC, it is rather slow n easily uprooted by shrimps.
for the dwarf harigrass, is it better the plant it individually like HC or whole bunch tied like sold in LFS?
when growing HC, do not put shrimp during initial stage. Not until it start to spread.
hairgrass should be plant in small bunch, not the whole bunch you bought from LFS
unfortunately 99% have itchy hand.when growing HC, do not put shrimp during initial stage. Not until it start to spread.
i think it takes 2 months dry start to full grow HC?
All type of mosses/ us fissiden/ glosso/ hairgrass/ mini us fissiden/ petite nana/ e. tenullus and many others as highlighted above.
