    Hi Simon,

    Try not to use portrait format for fishes, unless you have an interesting background and the fish is in a good position. Instead, try to get the fish to fill the frame.

    But if you must use portrait format, you need some "space" management.

    For example, if the rummy nose tetra has more space on the left such that the dosal fin at the point where it is one third of the entire width, it would be good. And the picture is cropped slightly from the bottom such that the fish is floating at the lower 1/3 mark of the picture. This would have made a vey powerful picture, as if the rummy nose is swimming out of the plants, and the background remains interesting, with the tip of the plant in focus.

    Especially if your subject does not fill the frame in portrait presentation, the rule of thirds helps with visual presentation.
