    Hi

What is that thin film of oil-like thing on the surface of the water?
I have a guppy but he does not seem able to clear it.
Anybody know how to get rid of it or how to prevent it?
Any cheap method to get it away? Quite unsightly....

    Thanks in advance!

A surface skimmer will slove the problem.

Maybe just one guppy is not enough. Try a few more. Swordtails, platies, mollies can work as well. I have about 15 of such "live skimmers" in my 5ft and it really kept the surface clean without need of a skimmer.

I have the same problem. What do the livebearers do ? Do they eat the 'oil' ?

Just curious why do we need to remove the "oils". Any side effect to my tank ?

Will this cause my Fish or Shrimps to grasp for air ... faster gills pumping etc ?

Side effects? Think not.... I've been removing this 'oily' layer for years now and yet to experience or hear any side effects on the fish/shrimps.
    Cheers!!

Had the same problem. film of oil and 3 guppies in a 2 feet tank and they were not clearing it.

Found the reason was because the guppies were 2 well fed. Started feeding only every other day....now my surface is clear of the film
