This is my third Ram that has developed a big cyst on her mouth area. My previous two died eventually after much effort to save them. Her recent behaviours are reclusive, poor appetite and breathing very heavily. She must be in alot of pain.

I doubt I can get myself to do it, but has anyone of you actually done it? If so, what method was used which you think is quickiest and painless?

Prepare a pail of ice , drop your fish in and the instant it hit the ice, it will die.

Bag it in water and leave it in freezer should cost the fish less pain, if that's what we are trying to achieve.

Throw it in a pail of ice is the same as throwing it in the fire. Instead of fire burnt, the fish is frost burnt. Terrible death.

but, waiting for it to freeze is slow death....

i would encourage a faster death if it has to be. If there is pain, it will be only a fraction of a second.

Check out what The Krib says: http://www.thekrib.com/Fish/euthanasia.html on killing of your fishies. The off-with-the-head method is advocated there too! []

more article can be read at here.

I prefer the method posted by lorba. As the water temperature drops, the metabolism slows down and puts the fish (like human) into sleep/coma state. The deep freeze certaily will kill any tropical fish.

I doubt there is much pain involve. Basically, the fish gets colder and colder, everything slows down til frozen.

Imagine this. Would you prefer to die slowly of coldness or get deep fried in a barrel of oil? Deep frying can kill you in an instant certainly.

    Ahh...okie...

I used to use the ice method back when i was breeding and culling bettas. Then this thing called the "Luohan" came along to help me with the task of clearing the betta population.

of course the fish will die! 'hit the ice...'[]
anyway, i doubt dropping a fish into the ice water will kill it instantly.

I share the same sentiment, and personally don't see any reason to give it a premature death.
