    Hi Bros,

please help me identify if my guppy is pregnant. It does have a larger than usual belly and the black spot is visibly present.

Yes it is. A few more weeks and it should get bigger and darker.

Ohh. The female is still holding. Lights are off now, so I'll probably take a picture again tomorrow. She looks like she's about maxed out her belly. It seems stretched already. Haha. Hoping for good news soon.

    Hi Guys,

She's still holding. Haha. Eagerly awaiting.. Here's an update (taken from my blackberry. pardon the quality):

She's significantly fatter now and the gravid spot is quite large and very black. I was hoping for the drop last weekend, but she's quite adamant about holding them for longer apparently.. Wonder why..

Hmm.. She seems to be a little moody today. I thought she had clamped fins when I was looking in her breeding box earlier..

Looked like she wasn't quite happy for awhile. About 5mins later, she was swimming around again..

Has there ever been a case where the female just refuses to drop? I'm getting a little worried since she's quite overdue.

Just give her some time. Sometimes when guppies refuses to drop , it's because they are stressed ( experienced it).

    Re: Is my guppy pregnant?

Waaa.. She finally dropped this morning. I would reckon around 7.30am or so. Woke up at 8am to check and there were already a few fries on the bottom of the breeder box. Till now, 3-4hrs into her labour, I counted 57 fries and she's still dropping a few more in the smaller breeder that I shifted her to. Pretty awesome stuff..! And, these 57 fries I counted are all healthy swimmers.

+ 2 fries were dead on delivery.
+ 5 or so fries were still curled up. I used a dropper to "spray" them a little to help them "uncurl" from their fetal position. Some managed to break free, but had permanent issues with staying straight-bodied, others were stuck in their curled up position and didn't make it.
+ 1 looked like it had some fungus on the body and was probably not healthy.

I'll try to get a picture sometime later when the female is done. I reckon this constitutes a big drop then?

I have heard a few accounts of this happening. Might be that you are shifting her from to the breeder too late? Do you wait till she's already dropping before you shift her? Or are you timing the shift to, say, the last week of her expected drop?

i have tried to time the shift before, but when ever i place her in the breeder tank, she jolts around. looking really stressed out.
anyway im not into breeding , as its a rojak guppy tank. more interested in the plants hahaha!

    Re: Is my guppy pregnant?

Ahh. Perhaps she's really cranky. I hear some people say the female in a breeder box should ideally be able to see inside the main tank so she isn't so skittish. Also, a bigger breeder box might help. My breeder has a constant flow of water from the main tank so water params don't change at all. Not sure if it'll help you. Hope you get more fries the next time.. Even if they are not the main focus of your tank.

    Re: Is my guppy pregnant?

When I put my female inside a breeder box where she can see the main tank , she will go all crazy for about 30 minutes , and when she gives birth , there are a lot of deformed fries. While if I put her to a breeder tank (those plastic guppy tanks) , she won't go all nuts and the fries usually are perfectly fine the next day.

    Re: Is my guppy pregnant?

I guess its the space given to the female guppy. Its already pregnant and coupled with the shifting and new environment, these are going to add up the stress level that it already has. When i just started, I'd also put in the pregnant guppies in the breeder box but they just don't seemed to want to drop any fries. No choice, seeing that they were stressed up, transferred them back to main tank and next day, fries seen in the tank. The danger in this is that the fries will get eaten up by the adults so be sure to have some hiding places in the tank.
