Hello there! after a few days of wet floor, broken seal, wife nagging... I constructed my very own filter! most parts are leftover accessories stored in my store room... the final construction cost is $4.90!

$1 for pipe connector. $2.40 for Aquarium sealant. $1.50 for the Black flexible plastic water pipe. CARE to give some improvement tips...

Those hose used are not very reliable....they are prone to breakage. I would definitely rethink the whole design since leakage is what you want to avoid? Maybe an internal filter would save you all the trouble!
