    some species are, some aren't
    i have both types
    there's also a case in which the plant isn't getting enough nutrients and thus grows thin leaves which are easily torn

    I totally agree with DEA. Mine is the thick leave type. I was rejuvenated by inplanting Jobbes sticks near the roots of the Lotus....

    just inserted horti stick into gravel for my lotus.
    any idea on how long before i can see the result?

    depends on your lighting
    if you have good lighting, new healthy leaves should sprout within 5~8 days ime
