Simon, I saw a clown fish swimming together with a discus and probable betta in their advertisement picture. It makes me wonder wether they are really expert in aquatic fields. [:0]
went to far east to grab some aquatic compost and saw a new product 'Aquaclay', there are 2 different types, one as a filter media while the latter one is for substrate usage. 1-4mm

Aqua clay= kitty litter
You can roast some kitter litter and it will be essentially this.
Add some iron first etc, mix up good with a little water, cook at high temp for an hours or two etc.
Just like pottery.

Tom, would'nt it mix up the water column if it leeches out?
Am told that if using kitty litter got to be careful with the chemical content. Some litter have smell remover added, thus could be harmful to your fish and plants.
Daz, since its sold as an aquarium product. I think its safe
hi simon, was at far east flora at queensway just now, checked w e staff, she said no hav leh. could it be at some other branches. can tell me where, if i happened to be around tt area can go n see see. tks!

Kitty litter is clay.
It can bind a good amount of iron.
If you cook it, it doesn't cloud up.
If you do not cook it, it still does pretty well as is.
I used it in the past for a number of years, see APD and Dan Quackenbush's post for old references.
Water + clay is what most of the substrates are. Each clainms to be something better than the others but they are not much different IMO.
Good substrate characters: good porosity(provides both anerobic ansd anaerobic sites within each grain), 2-5 mm grain size, hopefully spherical, very heavy/dense, hard, iron rich.
It's not some "secret" research these folks did in some lab for many years.

Simon may be referring to far east aquatic not far east flora.----------------
hi simon, was at far east flora at queensway just now,.....

Unlikely to be Far East Aquatic. Simon was probably at Far East Nursery at Thomson Rd if he wasn't at the Queensway branch.
Vincent - AQ is for everyone, but not for 'u' and 'mi'.
Why use punctuation? See what a difference it makes:A woman, without her man, is nothing.
A woman: without her, man is nothing.
Simon, I agree on the point that if it is sold as a aquatic product it should be safe for aquarium usage.
My worry is that folks who read it will just pop by any pet shop and buy kitty litter to use.
Guess I worry for nothing.
vinz is right.. its at Far East Nursery at Thomson Rd, don't really know if their queensway branch carry the same product. For those interested, this Aquaclay is at the plant rack nearest to the payment counter
roger. tks simon.
