chris, you taking pixs during lights off? the some of the fishes are abit overexposed and underexposed, while shooting at an angle will distort the image..

no, some of those hard shadow shots were a bad experiment in flash placement. ie: 2x 420ex entering the tank from the side.
(then after one of the batteries ran dead, so it became only 1x420 only at the left). heh
Not bad. Fish are really hard to photograph.
I noticed you tried to focus on the eyes of the fish, which is good. But sometimes when there are more than one of them, the other will be blur. Or sometimes the eye is sharp but other parts of the body is blur. Can step down the aperture further?

usually I'm too close for that and I'm hand holding (so I take 1/160 shutter)
If you use flash in your photo and the fish are not moving much, you can afford to lower the speed. This will allow you to step down the aperture.
Anyway, it's digital, right? Can try lots of options.

this was taken with flash top down. so I think it came out evenly spread so that's the technique to use..
anyway the second cory's eye looks quite mystifying..
Chris, I find the flash from top usually the best, except when the subject is BIG like aro, then you get a theatrical spotlight effect. Later I'll post an example for all to see.
Juggler, for the size of fish we usually photograph, and the working distance (less than 30cm) there is usually not enough DOF even with the smallest aperture.

Right, with macro lens and such, unavoidable. How about using a wider angle lens? Wider angle lenses gives more DOF.----------------

actually even with a macro len, a small aperature wouldnt give such a DOF.. I usually use F22 or higher if the fish isnt parallel to the camera
wah leau Simon, hantam us P&S users with F22, don'ch like that leh. my little pistol only got F8 [] [] [] []

I tried out a photoshop trick. since I shoot in raw, what I did was to blend a -1 and a +1 exposure shot.
this is the original "best" photoshop edited exposure I could get.
this is the blended version, the blown out nose isn't so blown out. (I could have blended in a -2.0 exposure version which would have provided for a more normal nose even. I think)
method:
using the raw file, open a -1.0 exposure shot, auto levels, save as a 16bit psd
open the raw file again this time at whatever "best exposure you want", do auto levels
select all and paste from the -1.0 exposure shot
paste it into the "best exposure shot"
add layer mask "hide all"
use the paint brush tool to paint over the blown portions to reveal the darker exposure layer.
flatten layers when done.
you're done..
do levels on each color if the color tint is wrong...
chris, you have the Canon RAW PS plugin?

choy, use Photoshop CS or ver. 8.. I prefer it from Capture One
*ahem* where to get PS CS?

results-wise, is there a difference between working on the RAW files vs a converted max-resolution JPEG?
does this mean that I should keep my RAW files instead?
