Hi Simon,
The pictures are getting better with each outing.
I must say the flowers are really very nicely photographed. The third picture is my favorite. Good composition.
Cheers,
I have dwarf cichlids in my tanks! Do you?
thks for the comments, but i think still a long way from good i guess practising will help
chris, yup.. i like dark background as well, makes the subject stand out
eddie, its the EOS 300D, using Sigma 70-300 APO Macro Super II, 50mm 1.8 MKII and the kit lens.. anyway dragonfly and damselfly are easy to capture, especially under the morning sun, they stay motionless.. What i find difficult are butterfly and bee
Benny, still far from your pictures
I like the composition in pic 2, the rest are nice too. [:]
why I don't do garden hybrids and aquarium strains: natural species is a history of Nature, while hybrids are just the whims of Man.

How about a new year's eve outing?
Cheers,

good idea, I'm game
actually the best time i find good for butterfly is between 8-11am
Simon, good try. Watch out for your DOF.
From experience, butterflies are less active early in the morning. As it get later, they tend to move around and do more works.
Same for many forest creatures/insects. More ideal condition if you get there early. Late morning have more chances of getting disturbed by wind/light, though there're still opportunities.
I'm not into photography. But I like all of 'em here! Nice indeed!
its an awful time to wake up.. why can't butterflies just wake late...
hah

Hah.. agreed, especially for me, late sleepers. Nature photography is quite a labour, and lighting/weather/background condition are always very unpredictable. Need to be very passionate about nature before we can really forget about tiredness and have patience.
Bukit Timah Nature Reserve is one of my best favourite, used to regular there very early in the morning, and many times, work for the whole day in the forest area till late afternoon. Every passing moments have interesting things happening. Seeing such amazing things/beauty always give me lots of energy and a sense of satisfaction & awe.
Botanic garden is also interesting. Even if you don't have a chance for butterflies, there're still many subjects for us. It's definitely worth going for your outing.
Well, you guys can also consider going to Sentosa Butterfly Park if you don't like the fuss of hunting and getting up too early. They're easier and plenty of opportunities. Good for practice as a start too.
I find butterfly aint the best subject to start out.. should with the easy dragonfly and other insects
hmmm.... why not start with a snail?----------------

Stationary objects like wood texture, flora and fauna are the easiest to start, since they're always there for beginners to take their time to fiddle with the technical aspect, excluding the weather condition. It also train starters to slow down to look at the artistic details for good composition and perspective, before it become second nature to them for something more dynamic and speedy.
Anyway, if you're conducting lesson, then you can try something more static first. If not, it's OK to try all sorts of subject for experience if there's chance - what is important is the joy of doing it. So get your gear out and start shooting anything that interest you.
