    Is there a website or link to show the different strains of Platys?

    Like Red Wag, Micky Mouse, High Fin, Golden Crescent etc?

    Seems Platys mostly use as feeders and not many breeders of Platys compared to Guppies.

    Any brothers in this forum breed the more fanciful strains?

    Currently keeping Platys and Guppies in an outdoor pond and looking for the more uncommon platys to add to my collection.

    Re: Strains of Platys

    Hi there,

    Here's some German websites for your reference;

    http://guppyfocus.blogspot.com/
    http://www.guppytreff-berlin.de/cgi-...isplay&num=181
    http://www.xiphophorus-zuchtformen.de/
    http://www.faszination-lebendgebaerende.de/

    I must agree with you that not many people in Singapore appreciate these bread & butter fishes, preferring the fanciful strains of guppies. I used to breed guppies but not anymore. Livebearers were my very first fish & I still like them as much as I do with killies at the moment.

    I'm not very interested with the domestic strains of livebearers, favoring the wild ones instead & the only livebearer I'm keeping is this swordtail species;

    Photo from Japan livebearer Association, Xiphophorus cortezi 'Rio Vinasco'

    This is not my photo but I bought the same fish from a member of the Japanese livebearer Association, who took this photo & posted it on the JLA bulletin. They are very fast & lively, hence, I'm not able to take a good photo without stressing them. It works for the killies but not the livebearers.

    This is a rather slow-growing, female heavy species & I've only got 1 male with a harem of females in a 37L tank. I find them moderate in maintenance & do better in large tank. They like clean water, do well at one moment & die immediately the next, without any apparent reason.

    If there's a platy species I would like to keep, it would be Xiphophorus xiphidium but it's not very common.
    Currently keeping large predatory fish 🐟

    Re: Strains of Platys

    Does anyone know a good lfs to find many Platys?

    I have tried plastic packets of Platys, but also found many with fin rot in it.
    I prefer Platys to Guppies because though they are colourful, they have to struggle to swim with their large tail fins.
    Platys are nice little owner-friendly fish to brighten up any aquarium with their superb range of colours.

    Re: Strains of Platys

    Yes, I am particularly interested in platies at the moment, but not the 'Mickey' variety. It seems there's an infinite variety of platies.
    The Wags of different colours appeal to me most, though Koi platies will be more than welcome.

    It's surprising not many people fancy platies here, and one can commonly get a packetful of them for a buck or two for feeding big fish.
