Hi Bros & Sis, just had a chat with Bro Zenith82 and we have come to realise that there are so many variants and names given to the known species of Sulawesi Shrimps that sometimes we just confuse ourselves. So suggested setting up a Thread to discuss and fix on the name to use locally and at the same time, help to identify the shrimps that may appear to look like a particular species but is actually another species. Sometimes it also appear to be easy to identify until we look at the actual tiny little specimen in our tanks and when we compare with the information and pictures on the internet, we just get clueless especially when some of us are just so new in the hobby and unexposed to so many variants.

Not sure how this would work out, but thought it will be good to give it a try and hope some "Old Birds" in Sulawesi Shrimps can help out too.

Here is a picture as an exercise to show why I think this thread would be useful. We can also share what physical traits this particular species possess that we can look out for to help identify it easily.

Also, for those who weren't notified, I have set up a Mass Order Thread for the Shrimps and Snails. Do check it out if you wish to participate.

    Re: Of Sulawesi Shrimps

I'll start the ball rolling, with the basic of Sulawesi's.

The Caridina dennerli or as we known as the Cardinal Shrimp.

Not much of a new variant we do not know of, but german breeders have known to successfully stabilise new mutations of this species.

Anybody able to identify the shrimp in the picture attached earlier on? Or wish to attempt?

Is it a Red Orchid? Or a Blue Dot Red Line? Or a Mini Blue Bee?

Brilliant findings! Indeed, the Germans are always very progressive and successful with breeding out new mutations and keeping them stabilized. Is their water so potent or full of chemicals that mutates the breed out?

Bro Jovel, thanks for the Articles! I shall post up some photos of variants of shrimps in my tank soon, as sometimes I too do get so blurry eyed trying to identify them.

    Re: Of Sulawesi Shrimps

I'll try to share my pictures and some are taken from the net, pardon me.

    Caridina Sulawensis sp. (Blueberry Bee)

Can be mistaken as the Caridina Sulawensis sp. (Mambo Bee) after discussing with Matt we notice the blueberry bee had dark bluish with translucent white strips body vs the Mambo, it was brownish with thick white strips.

    Re: Of Sulawesi Shrimps

And from my tank, I have found both Blueberry and Mambo Bee. The most misleading part is, when the Mambo Bee is stressed or newly introduced to a tank, it will appear to look exactly like a Blueberry. Also, at certain angles when their colours are fully restored, one may easily mistake them as A-S grades BDS.

There are some features between the Blueberry and Mambo that are different and helps to ID them even when they are stressed but shall not post it in here first until I am at least 90% sure that it is consistent.

    Re: Of Sulawesi Shrimps

They do look like very BDS to a certain extent but with yellowish milky white stripes instead of pure or slightly milky white.

    See the differences anyway.
    (Mambo)

    (Blueberry)

The only way to differentiate them even during stress is to observe the crown of the shrimp. For a Mambo, it will still look brownish black even when stressed.

The ones that will kill any CRS, BDS. and I'm not joking.
Just shifted them to new tank a few days ago only. Previously was kept in pH7.8, GH7, KH 4, TDS240. And don't ask me about temperature. Not that I dunno but will be a controversial topic later on.

I would say lets help spread this hobby and make it as successful, affordable and sustainable rather than just as a trend or craze.
It's addictive! Guess our poison deep into our heart and mind, sometimes I sleep also think about it. Hahaha.
