No crypts are not meant to be munched on. They just melted. But Choy nice work and composition!

thanx guys, personally not too happy about the over-exposed old leaf stalk though. I had another similar shot with a circular polariser, but then it took away the hard light effect from the new leaf too

anyway gerald, that's not a challenge at all, especially for you! yes its a crypt but what species?

the “leftovers” are part of the Rebirth theme, but I don't want them over-exposed.

well, you could use photoshop to blend both over exposed and underexposed. if you shot with raw, pass me the raw and I can do what I can. heh.

(alternatively if you shot with AEB)

actually I feel the cropping on top is too tight. but no choice, no space already. The other pics not quite as sharp as this, it's a nightmare trying to take this pic, very hard to see if it is in focus, don'ch have DSLR lah you know

I agree the crop is a bit tight. I would prefer a portrait presentation for this. I've cropped and kept the ratio 2:3 to illustrate.

With a more generous crop, you can place the point where the plant emerge from the substrate at the lower right "thirds". Also, a more generous crop will give the plant a bit more "breathing" space at the top. There will also be enough space at the substrate for the viewer to "lead in" to the plant visually, continue to the tip of the new growth before finally resting the focus on the point of subject contrast, which is the new leaf emerging from the old stock. The out of focused leaf on the left top section will balance the uneven distribution of "space" quite effectively.

As for the overexposed portion. If it can be correct, then the picture will be perfect. From the look of it, your flash is positioned on the right and it may be too strong. Either shift it further right (ahh.. the power of wireless) or set it to -2 or -3 and see. It will also be very interesting to put a mirror on the left to reflect a bit more light back so that the contrast level is not so high.

don'ch have DSLR lah you know

    Let me make a guess.

the very red leave with the patterns and the seemingly white crown reminds me of a Cryptocoryne nurii.

Or is it a Cryptocoryne griffithii under bright light? But the crown area doesn't look like it. Or was it all because of the melting?
