2217 does not come with double taps, you got to buy separately.

Classic models, double taps are optional buy. Unless it is a shop bundle. Else can DIY a on/off valve on the tubing will ease taking it out.

Double tap valve is good, it helps you to prevent airtrap or require priming of the canister for repeating startup as most eheim canister do not have priming function and have to use outlet sucking method or use external pump to kick start especially you do alot of water change.

Re: Help needed for 1st attempt of a 2 feet shrimp tank

so if i'm using a prefilter as well then i'll need 4 double taps? 2 for prefilter and 2 for canister filter.
    is that a positive?

    Wrong !!!

Water in ( inlet) ...... Prefilter ..... Canister..... Chiller.... into water tank(outlet).

Double tap for eheim 2217 : get 16/22 and 12/16

Attach 16/22 on inlet of canister hose, 12/16 on the outlet canister hose

Buy extra 1 feet hose for both 12/16 and 16/22 to attach the nozzle of the canister so your double tap can goes in.

Re: Help needed for 1st attempt of a 2 feet shrimp tank

Very importantly, must understand the use of a prefilter and not get for the sake of getting.
Main reason to use Prefilter is to prevent clogging of your canister. Basically we try not to touch or change the water or even wash the canister if not all the BB cultivated in your canister might get wipeup and have to restart. But as time pass dirt will build up and will clog your wool and flow rate drops.
Install a prefilter helps to ease that as, prefilter will help to trap the dirt first before entering the canister.
So if flow rate slow and dirt build up, requires you to wash just need to remove prefilter for washing so you don't touch the canister full of medias.

So just treat the prefilter as mechanical filter and your canister the biological filter.

    Ok I understand.

So just 1 question, do you guys even wash the canister filter? Or rather how long do you wash it once?
I believe many newbies like me will want to know.

For my case i never wash my canister, not sure about others. The most i wash my prefilter only. As my prefilter only all wool, different types of wool.

Reason for not to wash the canister is because we put medias inside to cultivate beneficial bacteria. If you wash you risk all the BB to be wipe out so best is don't wash, unless you just want to remove the impellers or the internal parts of the pump to wash it's ok.
