Hi I have a dead ram and the other turning rather dark in color. No major change except removed some plants but still very well planted and added air pump to improve water circulation

It's excessive nitrates. Ram dead plus and a loach, neon tetra. Keep doing 50% water change now. Sigh...

Do you have sufficient plants in the tank? Water changes will help, but having some plants like hornworts or frogbits will go a long way.

Believe it or not, I know of people who NEVER change their fish water, and their fish didn't die.

It is a well planted tank. I just cleared a portion of plants and also been doing dry dosing, I guess I overdose on the nitrate. Now its down to 20 ppm, I think the plants take up the excess nitrate from this point?

That depends on whether you have fast growing stem plants present. Slow growers like Java Fern, moss and Anubias will not take up the excess so quickly.

i second that. but they do need to add water to compensate for the evaporated loss.
