just like most other pencilfishes, no problem at all.
why I don't do garden hybrids and aquarium strains: natural species is a history of Nature, while hybrids are just the whims of Man.

I think you may have the dwarf pencilfish instead of the three line pencil.

    Cheers,
I have dwarf cichlids in my tanks! Do you?

    Nannostomus marginatus a.k.a. Dwarf pencilfish

    Nannostomus marginatus var "Rio Negro"
Notice the difference in the markings. Most folks mistake this variant with the three line pencilfish because of the tail markings.

    Nannostomus trifasciatus a.k.a. Three-lined pencilfish

    Cheers,

I have some of my marginatus showing faint reds on the caudal, but their flanks never have such a long red streak. I distinguish marginatus and trifasciatus more by their overall body shape (especially the snout) than colour markings.

I find marginatus more stout with a shorter snout, and the trifasciatus longer, more torpedo-shaped. However these are rather arbitrary. Where did you get info about the Río Negro variety? All I found are in German.

Sorry, not very familiar with pencilfish, but was at CS the other day, and remember seeing their dwarf pencil without any red markings at all on their caudal fins.

Benny is showing a variety from the Río Negro which as such markings. I have also seen some with very faint markings.

    Yeah, it's marginatus.

but i think the three line pencil that benny showed us is actually Nannostomus erythrurus..the difference is the thickness of the back line running from snout to tail.

this is trifasciatus by somone of net.

and this is the erythrurus of mine.

Got it from the Japanese magazine Minima. Think Biotope still have the magazine...

I had the N. erythrurus, but they all died before I got round to taking some pictures. What a waste.

Irfanview will allow you to add text overlay (BUT DONT DO IT ON YOUR ORIGINAL!) if you don't want to use PS.
