    How much should I dose?

    I'm having a 42litres/ approx 12 gallons planted tank, 24w X 2 T5 6500k light fixture running 11hours daily and also CO2 running at 1-2bps (running at 1.??bps to be exact).

I'm intending to have a HC carpet which I understand is quite a demanding plant from alot of the info i've gathered through AQ.

Currently, my HC are experiencing some environment transition as I believe they were actually being planted emerged before moving into my waterhouse.

So I'm wondering how much ppm (N,P,K) will be recommended to have a nice and green HC carpet in time to come. As from the instructions stated on the bottles (seachem), the recommended dosage seems to be very very minimum (in terms of a few drops actually).

Co2 maybe want to bump up higher?
I'm assuming it's a 2 feet tank maybe 1.5 feet height or width???

Is the one you bought flourish?
    I'm dosing 5ml every 2 weekdays for my 50gal.

Actually I'm still experiencing with different bps of CO2 as my drop checker is still giving me the green light. Will be increasing as everything starts to stabilize as I just change the light fixture and just started dosing Ferts.

My tank is actually a 1.5ft tank having 1ft height and 1ft width. Had a big headache with 1.5ft fixtures that's why decided to get a 2ft set for my tank.

I bought Seachem Potassium, Seachem Nitrogen and also Seachem Phosphorus and Trace from some other brand.

Oh, forgot to mention my soil currently is ADA's Amazona both normal and fine.

if it is brand new ADA soil, then you should be OK for couple of months, just dose K, trace and Fe.

For the drop checker, if the manual told you to add tank water, do not do that, instead use kH = 4 solution instead.

For HC, don't put any shrimps, not until your HC carpet

Yups, it's brand new ADA soil.

For the drop checker I'm using D4kh solution too so I presume should be quite reliable at the moment.

Cannot put shrimp?! I've placed in 5 cherry shrimps and 1 oto in, hoping to help to control the algae growth in case there's gonna be any outbreak.
Do you have any alternative which could benefits the best of both world? Or maybe strike a better balance between algae growth and HC carpeting?

Please pardon me as I'm still very new to this hobby at this moment.

How old is the setup? I'm assuming that you put shrimps after tank finished cycle wich is around 4 weeks, they hc should carpet by that time

Ya, my tank have finished cycling after about 4 weeks before I introduce the shrimps in, but, my HC did not carpet, instead many actually melted. That's also why I changed my light fixture and start to worry about my fert dosage.

Is there any fix formulae or ppm as to how much should I dose according to the volume of my tank?

There are many fertilizer calculator around, my blog also have. For example, if you are using Seachem N, for your tank size of 12 gallons, every ml will add 1.67ppm of Nitrate to your tank. So, if you want to dose 10ppm, you need to add 6ml.

Oh, tried your calculator. According to the recommended ppm I would have to dose 6ml, which is alot more than what is stated on the bottle. Is it ok?

Re: How much should I dose?

Thanks Bro! Very useful links indeed!

Question, I tried using the dosing calculator and based on the Estimated Index, I'm suppose to dose 20ml of Flourish Phosphorus to my 42 litres tank 2-4times a week.
Will it be too much? As it works out to be 20ml almost every 2 days..

EI has high water change. The minerals and excess are reduced by the higher WC.

If you do normal WC when dosing EI. Very easily you'll see algae, save EI for next time.

    Oh, I see I see.
In this case actually what kind of ppm guidelines should I follow or how often should I dose if I'm doing WC once every 3 days?

For starters, just follow the ones printed on the bottle. alot of folks tend to "self-misguide" and mix them up (this inludes myself )
IMO I do suggest you to use that to use it to count how much the dosage suggested by the label gives, it will give you an idea of whats going on...

BTW, if your the chemist type of guy then what i said on top becomes not really good. Since some folks dive right into EI...

If you follow EI, your weekly dosage target are
    NO3 5 - 30 ppm
    K+ 10 -30 ppm
    PO4 1 - 2 ppm
    Fe 0.2 - 0.5 ppm

Yea, thinking I'm giving up on the instructions from the bottle as it really is a great deal of difference and very hard to gauge as and well I do WC. It's like 2.5ml for 80gallons, dividing out is gonna be a headache.

Guess I give EI a try and be more hardworking on my WC and see how everything goes!
