    Hi guys,

Want your opinion in my effort of trying to get the perfect tank size on top of expedit 2x2.

    in squence they are
    1. 60x35x45cm
    2. 30x15x18inch
    3. 79x39x60cm

i would prefer to get 3,
but want to get more opinion on pros and cons.
any insights is very much appreciated

    Thanks in advance

Re: Yet another ikea expedit attempt

1st : your flicker URL is making me spin
2nd : i would choose center or 1st tank or 2nd, reason weakest link in lamination if 3rd water drips from side directly on the weakest link.
3rd : where do you intend to provide addition bracing
4th : water proofing or you are simply going to take care of it only? i was looking at some items about this, in case you never noticed. (think about those careless people who blindly follow, they spill water anyhow one)

P.S: got a time i was leaving a friend's place after unrooting a friend's phone, took a picture of a chipboard plank.... if you see that... sure shock... cause i was too.... EPIC looking chipboard plank.

lol... i cant flip the text. too noob to figure out how haha.
    point2 noted.
but having 2ft height apart from lighting what else might be the issue actually?
for 2.5ft-ish tank is a brace really needed?

i forgot where i bought this laminating sticker many years back.
intend to look for the same thing.
and then coverup as seamlessly as possible on top until small amount on the sides.
last time i managed to protect my ikea wall cab for few years from oil rain splash and humidity, it was an outdoor kitchen.

btw if i werr to get those boyu kind of cab, they are pretty much the same chipboard right?
and so far cant seem to find a nice looking rack for living room.

Re: Yet another ikea expedit attempt

no brace will need thicker glass.

if high, lighting is easily settled by money with stronger lighting. but scapewise imho look like flowerhorn tank more.

    most cabinets
thicker chipboard to support larger load or designed to hold heavier load.
different lamination finishing, as in how the laminating was done.
normal laminate is cut at edges. stick on using 2 layer of shoe gum on both sides.

Re: Yet another ikea expedit attempt

Tall tank, narrow base... the centre of gravity will be high and it will be easier to topple over. Not forgetting, that it is sitting on a taller shelving with similar depth AND you will be adding lights on top.

With that base, I'll go with max 45cm tall (or 45.7cm).

Scaping wise, if you get the 60cm, IMO, the easiest to pull off nicely will be tall at one or both sides to make it look like you're doing a cross section of a stream.

For lights, with the limited depth, you can only put so many lights... so it will affect your choice of plants.

Is that compressed or chip board? If it is, you have to very very careful not to let it get wet. Water at the joints of the laminate will be soaked in... in the long term you will have trouble. The middle tank is about 130 kg of water, not including rocks and substrate. The largest tank will be about 170kg of water.

wow guys... geez.. never thought would be that heavy. really reconsidering.
i am waiting for chocho to chipped in.
wondering how his tank fared up on one side of expedit.

i actually plan to hang up the light.
there is a reason for thinking of 2ft height.
planning to make a partition for turtle on top.
    still trying to draw though.

Re: Yet another ikea expedit attempt

I looked up the Expedit shelving unit in the Ikea catalog. If it's put together the way I think it is, I won't trust putting a 130kg tank on it. It looks solid, but if its typical Ikea construction, then there's only 2 or 3 tiny pegs holding each joint together, plus 2 fasteners. I'll worry about sideways wobble in the mid-term. If you really want to stick to that, I suggest getting the Ikea cross braces and attach them to the back. Measure first though.

Water density is approximately 1kg per litre. To get volume in litres, multiply the 3 sides in CM, then divide by 1,000. The result is the volume in litres and the weight in kg.

Re: Yet another ikea expedit attempt

I have a 2 foot tank sitting on an Ikea Expedit. So far so good, will probably move it on to a proper rack in the near future. The construction seems sturdy enough but a bit worried about water seeping into the chip board via the sides of the laminate.

    yo.. bro...
    now asking east ocean haha.
    guys thanks foryour inputs.

i deviate from initial idea, now following bro UA.
reason being afrer review, mechanically my tall tank turtle penthouse design have flaws and fabricating is risky.
so switching to two tanks idea.
nothing decided, just priority shifted. still sourcing and asking quote

    There you go:
    http://www.ikea.com/sg/en/catalog/products/S29887428/

It was initially purchased for my daughter for her toys, afterall this is a children's series from IKEA. I got no other place to place my tank and the top of the cabinet is really empty. The fishes in the tank belong to my daughter anyway, so what the heck, I place it on the cabinet.

I will post a picture of it shortly when I get home.
