OK, since we're mostly using macro function to get at the tiny fishies, let's record the magnification powers of various filter combinations with each camera model.

    Procedure:
    • set camera to maximum zoom
    • use manual focus to set to minimum focus distance
    • bring ruler into focus and make sure it is horizontally aligned with frame
    • magnification factor = 36 / (length of ruler seen in picutre)
for the 35mm film format, the film is actually 36mm wide, hence the magnification formula.

At factor = 1.0 you get live size, larger than 1.0 you are magnifying the subject.

yeaeh. but what exactly are you showing?

are you showing how close you can go or how much magnification you can achieve?

either one requires a distance reference from how far you are away from the subject.

Yes, check out the procedure. go to minimum focus which means this is the maximum magnification. It serves to inform what is the maximum magnifacation acheivable for a given filter combination.

Ruler is also helpful in showing up distortion.

choy, just a suggestion... you should take a shot of (example a coin) then members can see how much details after adding a filter... or perharps the lost of details?

Simon, that would be for another thread, this one is to measure the magnification factor. You go and try that with your reverse lens lah

we should try this with your reverse lens

Not sure whether you're awared, diopters/filters/TC can degrade the quality of the image, though the best one you get will be acceptable in quality. I will personally avoid using it if there're other possibility.

Very often, beside using macro lens which is the best, a cheaper alternative for me is to use extension tubes, though reverse lens is also possible. It's also possible to make a combination of all these.
