Pseudomugil sp."Timika"

Blue-eyes are small fish, but they pack a punch in terms of color, pattern, and finnage, all in one package! The specific Pseudomugil (Blue-eye) that I will be covering today is known right now as Pseudomugil sp."Timika". In all honesty I have not seen a blue eye this gorgeous in a looooong time! These small fish come from Irian Jaya, the Western neighbor to Papua New Guinea, on the island of New Guinea.

How did you get the location info? They came into the trade as sp. "Red Neon" with no details on location.

I doubt on the place because the river is heavily polluted by mines unless if the capture is made above the mines.

Just on the information a word " Irian Jaya"
The papuans prefer talk about West Papua than of speaks of Irian Jaya (Indonesian name).

These fish arrived at the same time as Melanotaenia cf. ogilbyi and some others, but no location data was given. Only the trade name is known.

I had no idea it had been discussed before! Lol, my apologies. The friend that I got the information on this fish from, is an aquarium shop owner, and he obtained them from a close-friend supplier of his. Then that supplier has his own collectors out in that area.

I contacted my colleague on his mobile, but the operator told me that he is not reachable, it must surely be on site (West Papua).

Sorry aqualifestyle34, I did not purchase any Melanotaenia cf. ogilbyi. I don't think think they were M. ogilbyi, because the lateral band was very distinct. I have a feeling that it could have been the newly described M. mairasi, but I cannot be sure. I haven't seen any more of those rainbows for sale.

The sp. "Red Neon" were very small when they first arrived, about 2.5 cm in total length, with the females around 2cm. Ronwill has much bigger adults.

If these were from the Kopi River in Tembagapura, West Papua, then they are probably conspecific with Ps. ivantsoffi.
