Yea, try to keep as low tech as possible. 1 beta and some tetra. Light on 24/7
By the way, you experience a silky lay on water surface if keeping beta? How to tackle this problem?

Oh ya, forgot to mentioned the express cycle method. The soil was damp outdoor with the moss for 2 weeks. The water is from a matured fish tank. I considered it is already cycled completely. Fish introduced 1 day after set up. Plants pearling the next day as well the fish are feeding. Using 5w. Still testing if algae will bloom, so not to add fatalizer at the moment.

May be you all can try this express method.

The silky part doesn't seems to be from plants. The last time with beta also faced the same problem. Is it the slime from beta? I am not beta mainiac so really appreciate input from bros.

What are you feeding the betta with? Usually the film on the water results from their pellet food. Easily removable by aerating the water. Doesnt really have any effects, its just unsightly.

thanks diazman. As you see neither pump nor filter. may be that's the consequence. just added cheery shrims and more tetra. looks like may need at least air pump soon.

    Re: Cube 1ft

Just be careful though. The betta and tetra will snack on the cherry shrimps.

    Re: Cube 1ft

The layer of oil is from the fishfood. When we overfeed at times, this will happen. Some people call it protein.

There are products called surface skimmers. It collects water from the surface, thus collecting all the oil.
I have seen many different skimmers, but i do not like most of them sold at seaview. Those they sell are attached to our filter, thus collecting all the oil from the surface into the filter, and for those whose filter pumps out the return water from the top of the filter cylinder, the oil is mixed and pumped back into the tank. U willl never get rid of the problem.

The best skimmer i have seen, is from ADA. It is called VUPPA-1. It is a totally separate stainless steel device with abuilt in pump. The best thing i like abt it, is that u get to wash it separately when it is full of oil.

By the way, there is disadvantage to have a layer of oil. Your plants will receive lesser light, due to the layer. If the layer thickens, your plants may not be able to survive. It is terribly unsightly too.

Good luck with the skimmer. Please let us know if you get one. I have yet to find out where to get it.

not really, more plants less fish is the key, so far the problem is to be algae with 24/7 light

thanks for the tips. it's not in consideration since this is only version 0.1 for me. i just do normal scooping along with water change.

yes. you're right. left 1 cherry. and a lot of dead cherry contribute more oil film on the surface.

soon I'll trim the plants this weekend. let's see.
