welcome to AQ
Heyhey!
First post in Aquaquotient. Heard abt this awesome forum with lots of fellow Shirmp keepers, from my bro, Markssw.
Well i've had had 2 shrimp habitats in nano tanks, one with sand and stone/rock in a Fluval edge tank (it has since be decommisioned).
Another planted tank with soil.
Quick question, i've had some problems with my shrimp in terms of reproducing, they were gestating with eggs in the sand tank but not in this soil tank. i understand that soil should be easeier on the little fellas. Anyone else faced a similar situation?
Looking forward to all the poison and tips from fellow shrimpers and nano tank enthusiasts!
Cheers!

A warm welcome to the forum and to the shrimp keeping hobby
Perhaps a full tank shot, along with what kind of shrimps you are keeping would help us to understand why they're not breeding.
What soil are you using? Temperature?
pH and TDS readings would be nice too if possible.
Hi there!
I am keeping shrimp too.
Hope we can learn from each other too.

Hey Navanod,
thanks for the response!
i'm keeping about 12 cherry shrimps and 7 CRS 'snow white' i believe they are called.
i'm using H.E.L.P. advanced soil for shrimp.
ph level is 6.5.
temperature ranges from 23 - 26 degrees Celsius.
what is TDS?
Still haven't figured out, how to add pictures. the 'insert image' icon doesn't work for me.
thanks!

Thanks Diazman!!

I see that you have all sorts of rocks inside your tank. Unfortunately most rocks are not suitable for the shrimp tank as they tend to raise the GH which eventually causes moulting problems. That could be one of the factors why your shrimp are not breeding, the water might be not suitable for them. Do you test your water parameters?
Hi Cheetf!
Thanks for your feedback!
Hmmm may I ask what mounting problems specifically?
My shrimp seem to be mounting regularly.
I've only tested ph level. Which is at 6.5.
What else should I test for? And what are they testing for?
I've heard of gh, kh and tda. But I do no know what they are exactly.
Any input is appreciated!
Thanks!
Oh sorry for the typo. Hahahs
I meant moulting as well.
Any idea what exactly GH measures?
GH is a measurement of general hardness.
http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/DGH
Problems don't usually appear overnight. Takes some time. Different shrimps require a slightly different range of GH.
TDS and GH are inter-related as well. Both affects molting as well as growth.
However, if your only issue is the lack of breeding, you may want to check if you actually have males in the tank?
Also, check to see that you did not put any plastic items that are not meant for aquarium use into the tank.
Yea. I pretty sure I have makes in the tank. Had a cherry carry eggs while in the previous tank with sand as substrate. However, once transferred to this tank. The eggs dropped.
And there wasn't any eggs after. About a month already.
I'm guessing could be quite a few things wrong with the water parameters. Will have to sort it out step by step.
Happy to report that after removing what I suspect is a limestone rock, the shrimps colors have deepened and intensified, also feeding alot more readily now.
