the new thermometer that you intend to buy could be just as inaccurate as the one you are having now.
a laboratory grade thermometer would be accurate.

    anyway, think about it.
is it possible to cool tank water temperature to below room temperature by using fans only?

Take the thermometer to compare with a labgrade one and see if you get any difference. no difference = ok. if got error just substract or add, no need to buy new one...

Eh.. not quite. If the total amperage of the fans in the series exceed the max amperage of the source, the fans will slow down. But like Tawauboy said, the amperage is more then enough to power the number of fans a tank would need.

In a series, if one of the fans breaksdown and breaks the circuit, the other fans will stop too.

I know that if you load more then 60% to 70% of the max amperage of the normal transformers, the transformer will soon wear out and be unable to power the fans. Not sure if this applies to a PSU.

Nah, 'as many as you can put in' isn't alot cos there isn't alot of space for his 2ft tank... 2ft right?? :P

I've seen 400W PSUs on PCs powering dual processors, 6 USB2.0 used ports, 6 chasis fans, 1 cpu fan, 1 gpu fan, 2 DVD drives... I thinks fans are chicken feet for the PSUs.

Opps , I subconciously misread it as "as many as you want."

However, I still find it better to explain it properly, so that ppl can apply it elsewhere intelligently, like when using the "normal" transformers. For things like this, better to know more then less.

not likely to achieve 25.5 degrees in a non air conditioned room using fans alone.
even during rainy season, it would be hard pressed to achieve that figure.
most likely the thermometer is not accurate.

Agree. My office tank records ~24.5C and my office is quite cold.
No way you can get 25C with just fan unless your house is aircon or thermometer 'rosak'. Normal temp range for tank cooled with fan is 26.5~28C

    hi...

where to get the laboratory thermometer?
    how much will it cost?

so it can also measure the water temp. right?
if tis thermometer reads 24-26 degrees...
    i consider myself lucky... :P

do you need the accuracy? you can purchase lab thermometer from lab supplies companies.

if you can 24-26 degrees by just using fans then why can’t other people get similar results? there is no luck involved in this, just physics. you’ll never be able to cool your tank to be lower than your room temperature by using fans alone. assuming that your tank is cooler than room temperature (assuming cooled by dropping ice in), your tank will absorb heat from the surrounding to bring it in equilibrium with the surrounding. on top of that you have filter running and bright lights which adds substantial heat to your tank. so your tank will not be cooler than room temperature if you are just using fans.

Technically it is possible to have your tank temperature lower than room temperature. When the rate of evaporation caused by forced convection is removing heat from the water at a rate greater than the conduction rate for heat transfer from ambient to the tank, the equilibrium temperature will be lower than the ambient temperature.

The lower limit of how low the temperature can go is the wet bulb temperature.

    Hi...

can i ask if a 12v adaptor can use for multiple DIY fans?
lets say 2 or 3 computer fans...
coz i'm actually still not sure of how to fix the fan to the PSU...

    BClee,

    I tend to agree.
I once brought my tank temp down to 25 without aircon
i forced the water to evaporate by using all my existing fans, 1 PC fans and 4 small fans about 5cm diameter.
On top of that i use an industrial circulator to blow on the water surface at an angle.

temp dropped to 25 but evaporation is FAST man.
within a day loss about 1/5 tank.

How fast(rpm) are the profantec fans? compared to other brands like Coolermaster, iCute, etc? Noise?

    you can.
provided the adaptor can supply sufficient current.
sum up the current require by all your fans. typically 0.12A each but could be more depending on the fans.
get an adaptor which can supply slightly more than what you require.

I don't have to mod the fans connectors so I can still use the fans for my PC next time. I have an extra PSU so no need to buy this buy that lol!
