It also depends how mature is yr tank. I saw some very mature tanks with plenty of algae and no water change needed for 3 ft tank. Of course with a lot of breeding shrimps inside. The breeder say he only top up with direct tap water and maybe once in a blue mood for water change. I was very surprised. Maybe the amount he top up is minimum and the tank is able to buffer chlorine.

I suppose a little bit of chlorine can also be good for the tank, as it may work to keep in check or prevent harmful organisms or parasites
from flourishing. But care has to be taken so as not to destroy the BB in the tank and filter bio media.

Apparently there are experienced hobbyists who do not do any water change for months on end,
and yet their water becomes more and more clear and tank healthy.

Obviously the have mastered the craft of ecological balance.

Re: Water change for 2ft tank

I do alternate days 10% water change on my 40cm 10gallon planted tank.

Since started doing this instead of the 30/40% weekly change, observed much improvements in my tank... less algae, plants growing(for types which previously were just melting or dying), shrimps more active, platy started giving birth to babies.

So I'm sticking to this routine for the time being. But every tank's conditions are different, so can't say if it will work for you or not .. just for reference.

Re: Water change for 2ft tank

Start with 10% per week and invest in some water quality testing equipment. Every tank is different but the water tests will tell you if you are doing enough water changes or not.
Adjust the amount you change according to the results of the tests.
Also it is good to stick to a routine over time. Keeping a written log of the water changes you are doing is also very useful.

The water changes that people do on their tank are related to how many fish they have, how much food they put in, how many plants they have and how fast those plants grow, and their filtration systems. For those reasons it is difficult to give an exact answer on how much water you need to change each week.

Re: Water change for 2ft tank

That is very true. An overstocked tank must need daily big water changes to save the fish from nitrate over-concentration.

Also, usually in an over-stocked tank, the bio-media is not of adequate capacity (size) to handle the profuse ammonium production, so this is why water changes is so desirabe to keep fish comfortable and, more importantly, in the pink of health.

Re: Water change for 2ft tank

For my new 2' tank set-up (more than a month) it's 10-15% 2x a week... I also observed my fish, monitor my water parameter and quality as my tank is not that matured yet...
