My chiller has an external probe. But temperature in the tank is always lower by 5 degrees compared with the chiller. There is an "temperature error" setting in this hailea chiller that can adjust -0.5 degrees to reflect a temperature reading on the chiller as the tank. Any detrimental results if I set to -0.5degrees? Or should I just leave it. The manual mention that play play with it. Lol.

You may need to calibrate both our chiller and whatever you are using to measure the tank temperate.

Make sure you used the correct type of temperature probe.

Always shield the probe; using two loose wire to connect, loose wire will create noise and offset to the senor. If you have the two loose wire, make sure you twist the wires together to reudce noise pickup.

Normally, the probe use is resistive type, no need to worry about noise. However, very likely each probe from different manufacturer/model have different resistive value even though reading the same temperature. Furthermore, the length of wire also adding to this resistive value. Thus it is normal to have different reading. The important thing is the temperature delta when reading different temperature should be the same or about the same.

Yes, you are right. Addition resistance due the lenght of the wire (use thick wire if possible) and the resistance tolerance of the sensor due to different manufacturer are two major causes of offset. Still a good practice to twist the wire to reduce the noise pick.

Anyone know how to calibrate the offset if the offset is quite large beside changing another probe?

If the original sensor have higher resistance then you might want to try to add series resistance, but if the other way around then I don't know.
