When kept in warmer temperatures, they will deteriorate faster. If kept at a slightly lower temperature around 24 deg C, they will survive longer. The problem with keeping them in a heavily planted tank is that these fish are reliant on live or frozen foods. Inadequate feeding will cause them to deteriorate too as they have very high rate of metabolism. They move more, hence require more food as energy. You don't have to heavily feed them, but ensure that they get adequate feeding. Round bellies is the best indicator. Regular water changes are a must too for notho tanks unless you have excellent filtration with a large enough tank volume for a group of them.

Are you keeping them in a community set up with other fishes? If yes then they are being out-competed for food. Being nothos, they should be kept in alkaline water or at least around pH 7 due to the location where they are originally from. They are not black water fishes or forest fishes as they are typically found out in watering holes or small pools along the margins of the savannah areas.

They are also subsceptible to velvet disease aka Oodinium. You must add a little salt to their water (1 teaspoon per 10 liters of water) , which is not possible for a planted tank.
