Hi everyone, I need some advice for a noob here.

I bought a second hand Eheim 2213 canister from a AQ bro about 6 months back for my shrimp tank. It was working very well until around 3 months back, I noticed that the water flow out of the rainbar started to slow down eventually to a trickle. I changed the wool filter thinking that it might have clogged up and after that the filter worked fine.

But around 4-6 weeks later, the water flow slowed to a trickle again.. I dismantled the canister, gave it a quick cleaning (even the impeller), connected it back and it was back to normal.

Now, 4-6 weeks after my last cleaning, the water flow out of the rainbar slowed down to a trickle again! This time I noticed that there's a soft but audible humming noise coming from the canister. I shook the canister a bit and the humming noise got louder.

I wonder what's wrong. Is it because it was an old filter? The previous owner said it was used for about 1 year and had no problems. Any ideas on how to resolve it would be helpful. Thanks!

PS: my inlet is covered with sponge, and I don't have a pre-filter nor a chiller.

    Hi grenlif,

The inlet sponge, how often do you clean or change it?

Have you checked the impeller area? See whether impeller spoil. Or maybe it is just an air trap

About once a month? I just give it a good squeeze in the discarded tank water during one of the WC. Come to think of it, it has been more than 1 month since I did that. I shall do that very soon. Thanks

How can I check that area? I just opened up the small catch and took out the impeller for cleaning. Is that the area you're referring to? It was just a bit slimy when I cleaned it about 4-6 weeks ago.

Will air trap cos the filter to have a humming noise?

If your wools, inlet, outlets are not clogged. Nor is your canister malfunctioning. You can try cleaning your pipes.

A very old inlet sponge may have collapsed and will choke much faster. Time to get a new one if that is the case

you may want to change the inlet sponge to those stainless steel fine mesh inlet. i find it is much better than the sponge inlet
