Ok so I am looking to have a breeding colony of cherry shrimps. If I'm successful, I will have an exponentially increasing population which might be untenable for my 5 gal, as such, can you guys recommended me a small shrimp predator?

This will be a little tricky as the appetite needs to be such that it will not decimate the shrimp population at the same time..

    Any suggestions? Thanks a lot!

    Cherry shrimp predator

That is a strange concept you have.. For a 5 gal tank I'm pretty sure the space constraints will limit your population. Focus on keeping your shrimp healthy and happy first. In a small tank a stable population is a success in its own

alternatively, you may want to give away excess shrimps free to other bros in this forum. You are the predator and a controlled one.

That's a good idea haha, but I also want to have sort of an ecosystem set up.. With one secondary predator at least living off a self sustaining population of primary organisms..

Dragonfly nymph is an idea but wouldn't the nymph evolved into adult dragonfly and fly off? It wont last and would have to get batches of nymphs or breed them if it possible...

To Gambusia, why don't u get an aquatic organism that will compete with your cherry shrimps for food as less food mean less possibility of exploding population growth?

It's a nymph, it does and will grow up.
3-4 hungry underfed fish are more then enough. ( something like guppy or betta)

But it can come later when they breed very fast. Else not yet breed and get eaten up.

    Re: Cherry shrimp predator

I got the cherry shrimps from c328! A packet of 10$ I also bought galaxy microrasboras.. Uncle told me both can eat freeze dried blood worms, after buying it and attempting to feed then I realise how inappropriate it is..

    The worms are too big!

Anyone got idea what to feed the galaxies and RCS?

Coincidentally, the fresh can of freeze dried bloodworms is up for grabs at cost price $3

    Re: Cherry shrimp predator

Hikari first bites would be a good food for Microrasboras. It is actually a powdered food for fry but works well with these fishes. Alternatively, you could supplement their diet with freshly-hatched artemia nauplii. Finely chopped tubifex worms are good too.

The cherry shrimps are somewhat filter feeders, as I find. I have never really feed them anything except grindal worms, which are meant for the fishes, so they pick on whatever that's in the tank. I started off with a small colony of shrimplets given by a friend and the colony has grown quite a bit since, but of course, the population is kept controlled because they share the tank with a school of cf. woworae. Once in a while, I'll find a few cherry shrimplets hiding among the plants but that's all I need.

Having said that, my tanks are established, so it's not a problem. Otherwise, algae wafers or any commercial crustacean feeds should do just fine.

Thank you for your suggestions, will go and source for them. Meanwhile they are feeding to some extend, I crush the freeze dried bloodworms and scatter them around my outtake for the current to push them into the water. The galaxies are feeding but some too large. I think in the long run sinking micropellets are more suitable..

C328 should have Hikari first bites. I got mine from there. It's on a shelf, at the entrance of the shop. This fish feed is finely powdered and you'll need a spatula, which is enough to keep the Microrasboras full.

You can also try Argent brand of freeze-dried cyclopeeze. It's a very good food but more expensive. I got it from the same shop as well.

Thanks! Will probably be buying them from yunfeng later, too far c328. You roughly know the cost of hikari first bites?
